Based on Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name, and scripted by John Orloff, Masters of the Air follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group (the “Bloody Hundredth”) as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany and grapple with the frigid conditions, lack of oxygen, and sheer terror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet in the air. Portraying the psychological and emotional price paid by these young men as they helped destroy the horror of Hitler’s Third Reich, is at the heart of “Masters of the Air.” Some were shot down and captured; some were wounded or killed. And some were lucky enough to make it home. Regardless of individual fate, a toll was exacted on them all.

The series features a stellar cast led by Academy Award nominee Austin Butler, Callum Turner, Anthony Boyle and Nate Mann, who are joined by Raff Law, Academy Award nominee Barry Keoghan, Josiah Cross, Branden Cook and Ncuti Gatwa.

Hailing from Apple Studios, Masters of the Air is executive produced by Steven Spielberg through Amblin Television, and Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman for Playtone. Amblin Television’s Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey co-executive produce alongside Playtone’s Steven Shareshian. In addition to writing, Orloff co-executive produces. Graham Yost also serves as co-executive producer. Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck, Cary Joji Fukunaga, Dee Rees and Tim Van Patten serve as directors.

Part (episode) 5 was an absolute masterpiece! MotA is quickly entering the upper echelon of BoB and The Pacific quality for me. Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck did a phenomenal job directing the Münster raid.

The score did a fantastic job building up the tension for this scene. Episode 5 was my favorite so far. Well done!

The last shot reminds me of the last shot in the first Band of Brothers episode.

The way the music went in this scene...just couldn't help but have the feeling that of this group of B-17's heading up, very few or none of them would be coming back.

I've flown many times in the B-17G "Texas Raiders" (late model with Cheyenne tail turret). It NEVER got boring. The sights, smells, sounds and feel of that aircraft starting her engines, standing behind her, smelling the 100 octaine low-lead mixed with 60 weight motor oil (It was like coffee in the morning to me). Then the taxi and takeoff behind the flight engineer as the incredibly talented instructor pilot Pat Elliot, with WWII B-17 Veteran Dellon Bumgardner in the co-pilot seat, worked our way up and into formation with other WWII aircraft. This was the highlight of my life for about 10 years. Now "Raiders" and the B-17 "909" are dead, destroyed in accidents along with the civilians who flew in them. My heart aches for the families but also that those two magnificent B-17s are gone forever.

(spoiler)

feels like this scene is a beautiful send off to the last remaining b17s of 100th group at the period of this episode, since this mission was where almost all of them did not return home

"Okay, Blake, so we need music of the B-17s taking off for Munster, doesn't need to be anything too...."

When i heard about this series and its story, i cant wait to watch, im one of those who loves ww2 history, knowing that air bombing was one of the most dangerous mission of the war, objective on destroying industrial and manufacturing structure of the enemy is important for the allies to eliminate, for them not to make equipment and tools for war, and the enemy will make any effort to stop them, every episode was intense, not knowing who is gonna survive or killed.

It's amazing how they made their own b-17s. The show is very amazing.

Going to binge it in a few weeks so i haven't seen anything yet. Interested to see how CG B17's would look vs the real ones in say, Memphis Belle. Not sure about the sound. The wright-cyclones were a low drone.
