Nikon 1 Hands-on preview of V1 & J1 cameras

Today Nikon announced their (much leaked and rumored) new mirrorless camera system which they're calling Nikon 1 and I got to go hands-on with the first two models the V1 and the J1

@Techlology It was a vid that came in my press pack... I included it because it highlighted some of the features and general approach from Nikon that I didn't delve into in the main video. Plus I think it's kind of a nifty production... though frankly I like Nikon's "I am" TV ads much more, some of those are just fantastic.

@hbluna Canon, as yet, have no mirrorless system (though they're announcing something "world changing" on November the 4th, so that may be their turn), but yes, their DSLR's are great, as are some of their compacts.

@gibbo310896 significant reduction of size & weight (of both the camera body AND the lenses) while retaining the power & flexibility of a DSLR system. there's also a few drawbacks (depending on your priorities & tastes) like; no through the lens optical viewfinder, you'll either deal with live-view on the screen, or a digital viewfinder (most people really won't care, some even consider this a benefit for various reasons).
They're MUCH quieter, no vibration from "mirror-flop"... Google for more.

@JellePeterseTV Same basic concept, slightly different approach. Same goes for Micro 4/3 cameras from Olympus and Panasonic.

@Blunty3000 it was back about the first of the year actually but yeah i saw the E-p3 video and the slick trick you pulled to get the better lens (very impressive i might add) i followed your initial reccomendation and went back with Canon for my pocket point & shoot i got the powershot elph 300HS & it has the same image sensor in it that my T2i has and for what it is, does a remarkable job at it too. I am not a photographer by any stretch of the imagination but this little thing does quite well

Hey Blunty. Another great video, of course. I am a bit of a photography noob, and I was wondering what is so great about mirrorless lenses aside from their suposed compact design. Are they anything special or is it just another incremental upgrade to current Nikon cameras?

@daddytech Nope. I MAY have recommended against Olympus - a few years ago - when they were i a slump quality wise, and weren't doing anything really very interesting and the competition had much more on offer... but I've never said such a thing about Nikon, in fact I owned a mid-range Nikon DSLR and, in short, it was F'ing superb.
And back on Olympus, I now own an E-P3 and an XZ-1 from Oly, and they're both very impressive and well built bits of kit, I'd recommend then in a heartbeat.

I personally say it the same way as you do, but I believe it's actually correct to say it like knee-conn. :)
I can't wait for the hands-on, looks like it could be pretty cool, especially for video.

@acmoc Its quite sad for Sony when Steve Huff mentioned in his site that the J1 beats NEX 7 at ISO 1600, shooting RAW with NR turn off.

And we are talking about a APS-C sensor getting beat by a tiny little sensor. Not to mentioned the size of NEX system.
