Feature engineering is definitely an art. As a chief data scientist in a very niche market (remote sensing/disaster recovery/risk/security), this assessment is spot on. Only focus on data science if you wake-up every day and look forward to applying Bayes theorem to your everyday decisions.

Reminds me of what a professor told the class: "Jeez! You don't need a PhD in linguistics before you write a novel."

I am a data scientist in public health working on projects from tuberculosis, malaria, diabetes, and newborn screening.. Data science without pairing it with something else is worthless. The only reason I even get job offers is because I have taken the time to learn software engineering, highly specific science fields, and data science. I have run into too many 'data scientist's that cannot add value because they didn't have the domain knowledge outside data science to actually give meaningful contributions.

Hi! My opinion is instead to be a data scientist, to be a software engineer with data science skills. Data science is a skill that will help you to give to your project some good and nice abilities.

AI is not replacing any technical job... Not now and probably never, it will help us make better decisions, solve a lot of problems and terminate "boring" jobs.

I don't agree with 7k data scientist jobs vs 53k software engineering jobs. These 53k will be distributed across various tech stacks such as java, python, Ruby, javascript etc. You are going to learn one of these so your jobs will be limited to that. Not all 53k

Kaggle is not at all like code wars. Code wars seems to be just a run around the house video game (kinda). Kaggle (as a space) is instead really oriented toward making an ecology of data sets, and a dynamic 'network' of different kinds and levels of data workers/explorers/analysts/scientists, more accessible.

I live by Ann Arbor. Waymo has autonomous vehicles driving through there all the time. You can already buy cars like Teslas that can do a lot of things without driver assistance. They’re doing a lot more than struggling “to get across the street”.

Software is everywhere. Data Scientist/Analyst usability is dependant on the context. You may have opinion do you need one. But you propably dont have option do you want your website or your mobile application work.
Does not mean data scientist would not have jobs or be well paid. But it means there is such more developers to do in real world. More actual needs that are not optional to do or to have.

I worked at a mid-size tech company building internal tools, some of which required some heavy number-crunching. I did webdev/dataviz, my partner handled the data science.
*
At least in my experience, the "data scientists" were the first software guys on the chopping block when business turned down. It was always cheaper to find or train someone internally to whip up automated data collation and visualization tools. Knowledge of databases are most of this job anyways and any respectable software engineer already has that in spades - most of what passes for "data science" is some queries, basic math, and D3 visualization.
*
After me and our other internal software developer quit, they tried to hire a "proper" data scientist who also had some software engineering chops. They never filled the position as they thought the data scientists wanted way too much for the value they provided. They ended up pulling a product dev internally to handle the task. Take that for what it's worth, future aspiring data scientists!

machine learning will become a tool of software engineers. I have never thought about that

I was a data scientist at a startup and that shit was hell. Wait until you have to explain that your exploratory work resulted in a dead end.

Yes get into software engineering first!then work towards DS it would be easier that way because just about every tech company is always looking for DS may not be a lot of openings but they are there all you gotta do is be the one that’s the best and stands out from the rest.

Software engineering will require skills on ML more and more. Reason: computational power is ready, infrastructure is getting ripe
