Guaranteed that they are not sealed. They just don’t want trespassers trying to explore there.

The same in Germany.
It was brought to me, that big arrows to the shelter are also for the case if the building got destroyed, that helper would know, were to find the people in need to evacuate.

During the war, my neighbour Dave (86) used to sleep top and tail with his brother on two armchairs facing eachother in the living room. This was because his mother couldn't carry both sleeping children when the sirens sounded, and a neighbour had the job to run into the house & carry one of them to the nearest shelter - which was the underground station.
Also, the boys were separated for 5 years during evacuation, and both accused the other of growing up when they felt they hadn't themselves.

I lived near London for a few years in the 1990s, and my landlord still had an air raid shelter in his back garden. After he passed, his heirs (or who bought his house from them) removed it.

It's sad common people died, I hate when countries take war to the population.both my grandfather's were at Normandy, one navy, other 11th div thunderbolts 3 Rd under patton.he told us more n more as we got older, and was so excited when I went to stay in Denmark and went to his father's farm, arvid, in Gothenburg, who came to Pittsburgh in 1893. I actually met his wife Mary, my great grandmother, who lived till I was 7. I also met my moms g ma, who was from England. I feel grateful to have been able to know them

It would be worth while to preserve some signs for posterity and a reminder...

Why were they sealed off and not turned into a museum piece for future children to see what time was like back then.
safiremorningstar
Good to see these old, historic buildings undamaged and no graffiti.

My mum and dad went through this in the east end, when they were kids. Funny thing was later in life one of my dads best friends was in the Hitler youth at the same time 😊.

Parents need to start taking their kids on a walk through history in their own country! Instill Pride in being who and what you are! Parents need to remember that lesson too!

Hope that becomes listed / locally listed

Dear government, please don't destroy the remaining "pre-fabs" for the sake of history!

Every night for 8 months & 5 days, EVERY night imagine that? Apart from deaths & damage consider the mental torture to peoples nerves! A strong island nation.

I agree that this shelter should have been preserved for posterity so that they could learn about the London Blitz. The lessons of history need to be taught to the youth so we do not continuously repeat them, but somehow, I fear we will need to repeat again and again.
harryshriver
I was there this summer. It felt weirdly haunting to see those signs just plastered on the wall
leminu
Presumably these will just be cellars in houses nowadays, rather than being “sealed”.

Thankyou for sharing this part of London's and my family's history. We left England for Australia when I was a teenager and I grew up on stories of how my Mum was bombed out of the EastEnd and fled to the Underground never knowing if you had a home or a street and who had died.
Sandra-wwoz
Wait the black gate and the underground bit looks like the boy Mr.Tom (from goodnight mr Tom) looked after house.

These sites need plaques and legal recognition.

This is super cool. I never knew that the air raid shelters were still there.
