How to Be More Courageous With Stoicism (7 Tips)

Almost every religion, spiritual practice, philosophy and person grapples with fear. The most repeated phrase in the Bible is “Be not afraid.” The ancient Greeks spoke of phobos, panic and terror. It is natural to feel fear, the Stoics believed, but it cannot rule you. Courage, then, is the ability to rise above fear, to do what’s right, to do what’s needed, to do what is true.

Fears are phantoms. They're purely invented in your imagination. I realized when I looked back over my life that none of the things i was afraid of, the really big ones, ever happened. Ever! It was only my own imaginings betraying me. Now I ignore them.

I recently made a big decision that will significantly impact my life. I am currently going through a lot of adversity and struggle, but I know that once I reach the other side, things are gonna be better 👍

I was discussing your videos with a friend a week or so back. I bought your book The Obstacle Is The Way (from your bookstore in Bastrop, where I live). He texted me today with his copy of...The Obstacle Is The Way! Onward through the fog!

If you want to become a builder, you need to build things. If you want to be courageous, you need to do courageous things.

"Listen to Hesitation" I REALLY needed to hear all of I have been LOVING your work, man. I have a good two hour Playlist of your stuff, to carry me through work between my breaks lol - I have spent YEARS of my life devoted to a rather nihilistic way of thinking, and I won't say I was never happy but happiness was never something I FELT was FOR ME. I have struggled with depression/anxiety, and complex PTSD, and life always just felt too damn hectic to have any meaningful order found - but I found your videos about Marcus Aurelius and Epictetus, just perusing through historical informative videos as a sort of hobby for while I read, and it all stole my attention so fast. I have been blown away every day ever since - I ordered 2 copies, of 2 versions of Meditations, and am gonna be giving one of each of them away to this girl I've been having the most intense little moments with lol - I literally was never even able to bring myself to talk to her (of my own accord) until I had resided to align with 'Memento Mori' and the like, as opposed to 'values simply (merely) being what we make them'. Your work, and all the old stuff in digging into, has lifetimes worth of wisdom jammed into the smallest bits. Thank you for being you. Your content has helped me make room for reason to believe I can be happy, which I have insisted and debated against for far too long. (:

One of the personal lessons learned about courage is to brave enough to say no.

A great (if somewhat lazy) author once said that courage is not the absence of fear, but the defiance of it.

I got Ryan's book "Courage is calling" in the most unlikely of places. A wildland forest fire school/ department in Mexico. I'm holding it now.

I really enjoy your videos, this one is really great. It occurred to me that your book on Courage couldn't come at a more opportune time. It's apparent why courage is so valued, it seems so few people really have it. Thanks for the great demonstration of ideas as well as ideals.

Knowing when to stick and when to twist might be the most important skill in life. How do you know when that hesitation is your gut telling you you're about to make a huge mistake and how do you know when it's just fear that you need to push through? Would love answers from people on how they tell the difference when they feel hesitation in life.
