When a hard drive starts to fail, it makes telltale sounds. This machine does allow you to use the two USB 3.0 ports for backing up the data on the NAS. You can import data from the USB ports for faster population of it versus using the 1 Gbps Ethernet port on the NAS. It can be used as a high-end streaming service to eight user accounts that you designate. So if you want to have access to 3.78 TBs of data while you're away from home or have the ability to back up your data to your home "Cloud" storage, then you can do that. Care to share your latest movies or music with friends, family, clients? Go for it. When the NAS fills up, you can use the two USB 3.0 ports for adding additional storage. Or have one drive for backups and the other for expansion of capacity. Have more music in your collection than will fit on your smartphone or dedicated .MP3 player? Now you can have easy access to it anywhere there is an Internet connection. No more ads on your streams. Now if this had HDMI on it as an output that would be great for massive external storage that can be used as a media player as well.

If you let your friends store on the device you will be responsible in the first instance if it turns out one of them likes kiddyporn and the federal authorities kick in your door. You will have to prove that you weren't in any kiddyporn ring with them. Meanwhile all your PCs and the Beestation will be confiscated for months - if in fact you ever get it back. Also if anything happens and you haven't backed up all their data for redundancy then they will blame you if it gets lost. Also you will have to keep the power on to the device 24/7 so that they can freeload off your generosity. Don't let friends share your drive. Finally 4TB is a ridiculous default size and should have been at least 8TB.

This device is hopeless, it works very slowly, it copies photos at a very low speed, after two days of not using it, I need a few minutes to preview the photos. I DO NOT RECOMMEND IT, WASTE OF TIME, NERVES AND MONEY.
