The Slate is a new machined metal shell for the GameBoy Advance SP. It was designed by Makho and distributed by Retro Game Repair Shop. This shell converts the flip form factor of the GBA SP into something that resembles the Original, Pocket and Color Game Boy console that preceded it. So let’s take a look at it and see what it’s all about!

16:43 BTW I loved the "NOENTIENDO" name on the Slate label, it's funny because in spanish means "I don't understand" and in some countries they called Nintendo like that

Small detail, but one I always love, is the buttons still having the letters A and B on them. A lot of button replacements or mods tend to not have the letters on them, and while it's not a major feature. I feel like that small detail goes a long way in making the final product look less like a mod and more like a professional or official product. I enjoy details like that, and I do prefer to keep most of my devices looking as stock as possible. I'll modify screens, replace parts, but in the end, I still want someone to look at it and say oh cool you have this? And I can show them all the neat stuff I modded into it just by letting them use it. The slate project and the Unhinged SP from boxy pixel both have a professional sleek design that is enticing to look at, having small details like stickers or labels just adds that official product or professional look to it.

I really like that the slate is compatible with regular bottons, it helps give you more options for customization

L.E.D diffuser is really nice, boxy pixels shell I believe allowed you to put your original one into the shell. However I couldn't get mine to stay in place, so I ended up using your technique from the Gameboy macro mod, put kapton tape onto the light holes on the outside, and filling the inside with a little hot glue. I did end up trying to put the light tube in on top, which worked well overall. I love how detailed and advanced people are capable of making older technology these days.

I would love to see a plastic option for any of these shells in the future. The aluminum is certainly fancy, but I still prefer the look and feel of plastic.

We need a version of this for the original GBA (horizontal), making it a bit more compact. Looks superb. Great video as always.

Maybe you should be a little more forthcoming and tell everyone the cost of the model shown: Brass shell is $204.99! Brass buttons are $59.99 ... add in the screen and this whole thing is is $329.97! (Not including taxes, S&H or discounts). That's ridiculous. Brass is one of the cheapest metals out there at $2.25 a lb!

It would be nice to be able to have a matching housing for the back, like the og boxy pixel. Hopefully, mahko considers that after the initial run on these units.

6:48 I'd solder the wires to the driver board while it's disconnected to avoid having a soldering iron anywhere near the LCD - it very easy to overheat it and cause discoloration

Makho is a freaking legend. I'm super happy to see that he's providing these kits. I do wish that there was a little more finish to the product - meaning, the BP has a matte looks/feel vs seeing the machining details. But other than that, as always this is a really well thought out product. It's nice having options and competition in the market. Nice job Makho!

My only gripe with this mod is the lack of lens options for the display. Otherwise, this is THE mod I've been hoping for. Love the more compact design over the Boxy Pixel offerings, and the plastic button option is genuinely useful for designing the right pairing. Thanks for bringing it to my attention, I'll be designing a setup for it soon and preordering soon after.
