Frog tape is expensive because its adhesive expands in reaction to the moisture in paint to help seal up the edges better. It also doesn't stick as strongly as the blue tape, which is why blue works better in this case. For masking tape, generally blue has the highest "tack", followed by green (not just Frog), and then by yellow which is for "delicate" surfaces and barely sticks (which is a great use for Frog's yellow stuff for that extra protection from their expensive adhesive). Anyway, glad to see that there is *some* benefit to the blue tape. I also make sure to press it in really well so it holds onto the wood fibers as much as possible. But as others have said, use a sharp blade and a zero-clearance insert or backer board if you want the least tearout.

Short and sweet bits of helpful knowledge. Time is precious and SR respects that fact. Thanks.

The frog tape sticks to well for that type of application. It pulls off little splinters of wood when you peel it..

I'm still totally fine just finishing the edges by sanding or whatever like I normally do. I've got more important uses for the tape.

I do a lot of Scrollsaw work I've always used packing tape. It's supposed to help lubricate the cutting blade.
When you're bored add packing tape to the test.

Damn, that actually did help. Thank you for testing!

You can use scrap wood clamped underneath the project piece as well. It works great for me. Smooth as butter 🧈

My takeaway here is to use a sharp, clean, high tooth-count blade appropriate to the material in question.

Tear out prevention with tape is going to be a function of adhesion and the tensile strength of the the backing material. These properties are what counter the forces that are trying to push the unsupported fibers out. While tape is convenient, a sacrificial backer board is always going to be superior. You can think of the sacrificial board as really thick tape. Clamping it in place is really just a really high adhesion and the tensile strength is so much higher because the board is so much thicker than the tape.

If you are not doing precious surfaces, you could also use the much cheaper normal masking tape. Most painters I know (lots) agree that extra money in blue tape can be compensated for by skill (not pressing or burnishing the tape too hard to surfaces, removing soon after use, etc). Blue tape is just mildly less tacky (and that is not even always true). Less stick, more money - go figure. Almost always use regular tape here. Maybe a test with regular vs blue for a #shorts?

I appreciate follow ups like this. Matches my experiences too. Tape definitely helps a bit, but something like Frog tape's delicate treatment of surfaces doesn't help in this application

I used tape to cut my sink and stove holes in the counters in my 2016 RV I built myself out of a shuttle bus and tape works good.

Frog Tape. Duck Tape. Gorilla Tape. I'm a human! Where's the human tape!?

Plain old masking tape works better than blue or green tape. The adhesive is stronger and it is cheaper. Make sure to rub the tape down nice and tight to the wood.

Guess the moral of the story is, painters tape helps... if you're too stingy to buy a new blade 😝

When I cut 1/4 Inch I just use a utility knife a steady hand going over it a time or two with some good pressure it's good. I don't even bother with a saw

I would not have expected the Frog Tape to perform better. It is very weak in adhesion without getting it wet. It has limited functionality. The best way to use frog tape is by getting the edge wet with a damp paper towel and then wiping it with a dry paper towel before applying paint.

Frog tape has a specific application and that's clean sharp paint lines.
It's specifically made to prevent bleed-under along the edges of the tape.
The fact that Frog tape doesn't really do much in this application is hardly surprising.

Don't forget to mention there are jigsaw blades with reverse side teeth for cleaner cut on side you need. Don't know of that has already been shared. Good video. Thanks

Tape it, score the material with a knife. No tear-out.
