The Future of Racing? Roborace’s Almost-200mph Autonomous Racer

What is the future of racing? The future of driving physics? We don’t really know, but the guys at Roborace aren’t guessing, they’re building. How much do the performance envelopes of cars and car parts change when a driver is no longer involved, how do you make AI competitive against other AI, what happens when computers go wheel to wheel… all this wild type of stuff that could be answered without a bag of bones behind the wheel.

The point of watching racing IS the human error, that what makes it exciting. MF Ghost told the future.

Don’t downvote the video guys, Larry is just covering this computer with wheels. I won’t ever support this, but Larry is just doing his job.

"Being a racing driver means you are racing with other people and if you no longer go for a gap that exists you are no longer a racing driver because we are competing." - Ayrton Senna
I have never heared this quote before but it has spoke to me in a deep way. Thank you Larry. It just being somthing that you pull off the top of your head amazes me. Again. Thank you🤙

This is just like buying Gran Turismo only to let the computer race for you in B-spec mode.

Nope no racer then where is the human part of racing??? just watching machines race so they going to just focus on engineering? NOPE

What's the point. No drivers? Sounds boring.
Not for me.

There are RC track where all different scales of vehicles race.
Do not care to watch a full size RC.

It’s about the human element. Nerves, skill, physical endurance.

The whole point of driving and racing is the feel, the sound, the..unknown! Electric, autonomous takes the fun out of it!

What’s worse than electronic race vehicles? Driverless electronic vehicles. This would be the equivalent of watching slinkys race down the stairs.

The only reason it won’t take off that well will be because the human aspect is gone, there’s no character, there’s going to be very few mistakes. Still a cool concept

I could see mascar style races for this being cool. If they have different levels of driving aggression and really sell that to people at the race

The very beginning of automotive racing has been centered around the best team and best driver, by standardizing "rule" set up and operating on AI then both get removed and only input code matters. It's hard to root for a set of programmers, corporations like google or microsoft with assets will dominate, and with that there is nothing to root for. Yay your program stack won, it's minimal excitement at best. However I do believe that the platform has potential in connecting two worlds and simultaneously providing a confidence and much needed R&D in the future of autonomous technology. This is my suggestion, bridge the world of sim racing with this type of car. Now there's a few things that happen. You are taking a competitive E sport and translating into the real world, this gives you a live audience online, this gives the fans a team and a driver to root for. It simultaneously pushes the boundaries of what these vehicles can do because you still have human input and you can write in "laws" under which conditions they can perform. You can validate autonomous technology, push the boundaries of motorsport all while transplanting an existing E-sport into a light that already has a fan base. This creates opportunity for kids to dream and work harder at sim racing hoping to one day be good enough to race for a physical team, you can run the Le Mans 24h race with multiple drivers, battery pack changes at blistering speeds and never loose the human factor. The challenge would then be back on you to find someone who can perform everything necessary to pilot this machine in perhaps a VR rig, and I think you'll find that the veterans on automotive racing can't do that. It's a very different input sensation and thus you'll be looking for the younger generation of E-sports athletes that have grown in informational and sensational overload. The path to pro drivers would most likely be right after 18 years old, from there the world is your oyster, from driving upside down to back flips like "speed racer" take your pick. I think I'm pushing solutions to problems you don't even have yet but by judging the current comments you'll struggle to get this off the ground with AI controlled CPU's racing each other. Nothing to root for it turns into AMD vs Intel, we've had enough of that mindless debate in the pc world. Cheers!

Watching computers battle each other...😴😴😴 Don't they realize people like the SOUND, the MAN AND MACHINE, the ENGINEERING in a FAST RELIABLE ENGINE. Not just an oversized rc car powered by duracell batteries and a oversized forklift truck motor...

“In 5 years we’ll be riding in the back seat of our cars.” I think Jay Leno may have cringed at that moment.

Larry you’re on another level with these features. Look forward to the next one.

Basically smart giant RC cars. The connection from human to machine would no longer have the same meaning.

I appreciate the innovation, but we don't watch racing just because of the cars we watch it because we love watching our heroes like Ken Block, Vaughn Gittin Jr., Ryan Litteral, Hailie Deegan and BJ Baldwin etc. In my opinion this is freakin lame.

Well that sucks that takes the fun out of driving I'd rather be driving not programming

Y'all want a new fan experience? then you set up this VR rig, and connect it to a roborace car on the track and let them drive it.... now thats what i would call immersive! you know what i mean like flying race drones... ;)
