How I record my e-drum cover - and why I do it the way I do

I came up with the idea for this video quiet spontaneously. I talk about my recording chain (quickly), but more about some decisions and considerations while I record and afterwards. Share your thoughts on how you guys record, why you do it the way you do, what are your issues, goals and expectations? I'm looking forward to some discussions in the comment section!

Great objective and really motivating. Your approach to run a channel is probably the best.

Love that you take the time to share your passion...I wish I had a tutor to help me with my sound...it took me 2 years to get my EZdrummer to work through a lot of frustration...appreciate you taking the time to do this video, it's awesome.  The bottom line is that we all hear music differently and we all like a certain sound on their drums...but mixing is an art form if you ask me...I will continue to watch your insightful videos...thank you Mike.

I know I don't comment on all of your videos, but I do watch them all and I'm so impressed with how you're constantly improving your mix and overall video production quality. I definitely understand not having the time to really pour over a drum cover mix and just forcing yourself to put something out there with an hour or less time spent on the final mix/edit. Most all of my videos are that way (when I actually make them...sigh). It was good to hear your thoughts on the whole process and what you like to focus on. Keep it up!!

Mike keep up the good work and I like drumless tracks too!! I agree to play over original backs it tougher to mix!! It is way easier to mix with the drumless tracks!!

Very cool upload! I think you are too hard on yourself sometimes :) But, we all have that tendency sometimes I think. Keep up the good work Mike!

Brilliant, Mike. It’s not like you wanted to create a studio. You wanted instead to create a classroom, or maybe a lab, in which you could teach yourself a new skill. And if you were to use the “easy way” with pre-processed samples and tool-chain presets, then you’d never develop the skills you were wanting. Like you said, there’re lots of us out here a few years behind you. Thanks for trailblazing for us; we can follow in your footsteps and learn from your experiences.

Drumless tracks are an interesting topic. I have only used one and prefer to play over the original track because it forces me to study and learn the song or it is obvious Im not playing it right. I want my covers to look and sound as advertised but I also respect other drummers opinions on recording and playing covers.

Good video!!! I'm just a hack drummer, who's only been playing an e-kit for a year or two, so my skills are way below yours...My e-kit is a blessing because I can play drums anytime I want without having angry neighbors...

How do you approach the tempo track of your covers??? I've found when using midi drums, the tempo needs to be mapped out in order for everything to match/line up...If the tempo of the song differs from the tempo in the project, it causes problems...When the tempo is mapped out to the song, the click track follows the song like it should, & it's much easier for me to play/record to...

What I do is sit down & go through the entire song, making the tempo track long before I even attempt to record my e-kit...This way seems to bring the best results for me, but it's also a long & tedious process mapping out the tempo for a song...Reaper makes it much easier with it's customization ability/scripts/etc, but it's still a tedious process...

I'd be really interested to hear how you & others do this because there is no end to learning for me, I'm always looking to learn something else to help me along my recording journey...

I always use dry sounds for my drums too, I'd love to be able to record a real kit, but I honestly don't have the space & noise can be an issue at times...I already use real guitar amps/cabs, & the noise from those can be an issue, so I know a real kit would be too...I have all kinds of drum software, but since SD3 has been released, I'm slowly converting all my projects to use only Toontrack sounds with SD3...

Good video!!!
