Three critical tips to show you how to ride off road. Dual Sport and ADV Riders must know when to sit, stand, or waddle. My biggest mistake when I first started riding off road was to always sit, and when I stood, I stood too far back, and when I waddled, I lost traction. Use the simple pointers in this video to learn good habits, and correct bad habits like I had to!

Why is it that every time I try to find a video about BASIC off road riding, I get stuff like this with pro's jumping rocks, trees, hill climbing, fording rivers, etc? How about some beginner videos, with basic tips on when to sit, stand, shifting weight around? Maybe tips on cornering, braking, on gravel vs sand, handling small ruts, etc?

Great Video, I haven't been riding off road on my XT500 back in the late 70s, been riding sports bikes for the past ten years. Just bought a brand new XR650 waiting for the snow to melt. I thank you for these tips, this vid brings back memories thanks again

Brilliant video information Thank you! I went on my first ride deep in Laos PDR wilds and your voice in my head kept me up in the pegs or over the bars, waddling etc... I had a great time and impressed experience riders! All your advice . cheers!!

Great advice. Standing, sitting and dabbing/waddling are all critical techniques for being safe, conserving energy and having fun out on the trails. I hear of a lot of ADV riders that insist on either standing or sitting all the time and I can only scratch my head at them lol

I'm glad I kinda learned this indirectly from my long hours on mountain bicycle from early age, and i'm glad I made my mistakes and falls on paddling 2-wheeler instead of engined one. no guarantee I'll not screw up from now but I think I'm more confident with that long background. but having this video is a good refresher and hopefully something I can apply (when I have enough money to justify buying a dual-sports) cheers!

Well, I don’t even have my full UK licence yet, but I am looking ahead to where I’d like to take my riding too once I get going, and the freedom of trail riding looks exciting, challenging and exhilarating. This is the first video I have watched on this topic and I will say that your commentary is clear and eloquent and the photography is super. Thanks and I look forward to watching more of your content 😁

I would like to add something to the. waddling that is very important, slipping the clutch. One of the best ways to gain momentum is to slightly slip the clutch rather than relying on the engine to chug you along. I personally only use 1 or 2 fingers and lightly slip the clutch when the engine begins to bog. the idea is not to completely disengage the clutch, but rather to spool up the engine a little while maintaining clutch drag. Back when everyone used to race 2 strokes, it was the best way to launch out of a corner. I see a lot of new riders trying to rely on the torque of their 4 strokes only to stall out.

So your KTM 1190 review helped me choose my first dual-sport bike and your tips kept me just that much safer today on my first proper off-road trail (I did drop the bike once, and bruised my wrist and my ego)
I really wanted to just say thank you for such great videos, both the content and the delivery are first class!

Ride safe!

I use my streetrod 750 everyday on the streets but I have recently returned from West Virginia where I did some light adv riding no add ons or dirt tires and I loved what I rode I have to convert it

I love the wipout! I did that on a jump a couple months ago. with my son and nephew watching. I somhow landed on the rear fender and my helmet. It knocked a rib loose. But I still ride like im 20 year's younger and 80lbs lighter!
