In this video we use the factor theorem and remainder theorem to calculate 2 unknown coefficients in a polynomial. Given a polynomial with unknowns p and q, if we know 2 factors or the remainder when we divide by a linear expression, we can use the factor that f(a) = r where a is the root and r is the remainder.
0:00 - Recap of the factor and remainder theorem
00:30 - Find 1 unknown given a factor using the factor theorm (HSN Page 19 Q1)
1:53 - Find 2 unknowns given a factor and the remainder when divided by a linear expressions (HSN Page 20 Q2)
5:47 - Find 2 unknowns given 2 factors of a polynomial using the factor theorem
This video is suitable for students studying SQA Higher Maths or A Level Maths. The examples are taken from HSN Higher Maths Notes (Quadratics and Polynomials)
Note - A lot of teachers use Synthetic Division for this topic, however it is easier to directly evaluate the polynomial than it is to use synthetic division in this case.
