I was doing my MOOC assignment when an e-mail popped up saying EEVBlog was live. I didn't want to pass up the chance so I listened to Dave's random musings at the same time.
For 3 hours, I was chuckling in front of a paper inundated with mathematical formulae, my room mate throwing me queer looks every now and then.
In the end, I was more relaxed than exhausted after completing my assignment. Oh yeah!

The problem with the train thing is there isn't a lot of energy in there, unless you have a HUGE train and a HIGH hill: 1000kg lifted up a hill by 1000 meters is only 9.8 million joules of energy, or about 2.6KWh.

According to Wikipedia the largest trains are about 40, 000 tons. So if each ton is 2.6KWh per kilometer of elevation, that's 104MWh for the whole train per kilometer of elevation.

By comparison, the Tesla battery facility is 129 MWh.

Pumped hydro works because there is A LOT of water, and A LOT of mass. A hydro dam can easily be storing into the *tens of millions* of tons of water.

1:55:49 I should try making memristors again. My first attempt was a failure. The design was just not right. The second attempt failed too, but I got indications that one or two of the individual memristors worked for a short time, but were very fragile. The junctions were getting crushed during assembly. I have a third (unbuilt) concept that sandwiches together a thick base PCB with bonded Aluminum balls, a thin separator PCB, and a thin top PCB with copper sulfide pads to create very lightly sprung junctions. The top thin layer has many "fingers" that act as very light springs to form the individual aluminum-coper sulfide memristor junctions. (based on the old Nyle Steiner memristor videos)

Energy storage: Kruonis Pumped Storage Plant. IMO, it misses floating solar panel farm on top of it. Good idea, well implemented, poorly used due to the lack of solar and wind and other renewable energy usage.
