The reason people wait is because the pain is discounted by the PCP and you can't get a referral.

I once went to an ortho doctor because I was having bad neck and back pain. Nurse told me he would only talk to me about one thing, so I had to pick. Completely ridiculous. Our system is broken

Great to have found your video. I have had neck pain from relating to 6th nerve for many years. I have managed it with pain medication and help from a chiropractor and physiotherapy. However, of late, I wake up often from the pain. I have had MRI done several yeats ago and it is bone spur and was recommended to have surgery. After watching your video, I feel that surgery might be a good next step especially learning that there could be further irreversible nerve damage. Than you both for a great video.

Nerve pain has to be one of the worst pains you can have. I had a prolapsed/blown-out disc in my C7/T1 pressing on my nerve. It was the most agonising pain I have ever had. To add to my suffering (and the permanent weakness in my arm), my neurosurgeon made me wait nearly five months to have my surgery to fix this. This was seven years ago and did solve the problem, but recently I have been getting twinges of nerve pain in my arm again. I do have DDD in my spine, but I think the trigger was having my head in hyperextension too long whilst getting my hair washed in my hairdressers. I am trying to do a better job with my posture and doing neck/back exercises. I don't want to have full-blown nerve pain or spinal surgery again. Very traumatic.

I'm going through this now and feel like the hospital didn't do a lot. They seemed to have no idea. They gave me naproxen. No real exam or testing my muscles. Pain and weakness from my neck, shoulder, collarbone, chest, armpit, thumb. No X-rays or scans. Recommended physio. Swelling in lymph nodes they completely disregarded.

The other reason people wait is because the doctor is booking multiple months out ;-)

Hi, i damaged my neck around 1986. I was thrown by a teenage elephant into a triple somersault witnessed by many people. Then landed on my neck, head thrust forward, with chin into my chest.
I do get the nerve pain down my right arm snd put arm over my head. Lately, this is more settled
It was last scanned around 2010. I was told surgery would be too dangerous as the nerve being too closely pinched between vertebrae and may cause paralysis or tetraplegia.
I used to find floating whilst kicking on my back helpful.
Now I'm older, I'm having constant pain and wake up with sharp pain. I usually use a sarong placed under the lumpy bone area and stretch it upwards with both arms and head forward a bit.
I also do the chin tuck. Both the techniques give relief for short time.
Sleeping is the worst.
I have had no other help.
I do have gait and balance problems. Also i find standing in one spot for long, very difficult.

I have 3 bulging disks in my neck, a herniated disk in lumbar and spinal stenosis. It took about 4 years to even find problem because i had refered pain in my abdomin and as a woman i went through everything from checking for appedicitis to exploratory surgery looking for endometriosis. I never even realized my numbness down my arms was from my spine until i meet with PA at spinal surgery office. I feel like i have a numbness in my eyes. Where i squint and it relieves pressure/ numbness PA says in squinting im probably concentrating and sit up straigter so it helps alleviate numbness.
I wouldnt wish back pain on anyone

With Laminectomy, you cut through the main muscles in the back of the neck, that hold the neck in place. This muscle stops the head from dropping forward. I understand that there is a risk that this can be left permanently drooped.

Oh my, Dr. HOEFLINGER, I’m a 57 year old nurse that has already had a Lumbar Laminectomy in 2001 and fusion in2019. I never took a narcotic except maybe twice post op, I get more relief from Steroids. While in post op PT, I started having shoulder and arm burning with radiculopathy. I literally thought I was going to lose my mind in severe pain. After spine surgeon orders and reviews MRI HE SAYS “you should have neck surgery before back surgery”. The radiologist said not only HNP, I HAD “severe arthritis”. I’m seriously thinking of getting a second opinion, I also have loss of bone height with slippage. I’m miserable. Of note, when I told my PT about my neck pain the first thing he did was pick up my purse to see how heavy it was as they see that a lot with women! I am still working as a nurse with limitations of course, but I find it so hard to lift and play with the grandchildren.
