14 Solving Word Problems using Simultaneous Equations

I'm not sure if I'm right or wrong but on how my teacher taught me.-5-(-2)is -3 because negative plus negative is positive so that makes -5+2 which gives -3.and when you substitute into the equation m+n=-5 the equation looks like this -3+n=-5 then leads to n=-5-(-3) which makes n=-3.that just how i think but if im wrong pls dont hesitate to reply thank you ❤❤❤❤

I have gotten x as 7 and y as -12, is this the right answer
