I grew up with a mother and grandfather who went thru the depression. They taught me to prepare for bad times, not in fear, just to be ready to take care of my family without begging for help. It has come in handy several times due to loss of jobs, husband or self.
At this point, 70 in June, I am prepping for my family more than myself. Any information I can gather for them is going to be helpful (books, etc). I also take advantage of my great niece and nephews curiosity and buy them crafting presents that allow them to learn some of the lessons they need to know
Grand-daughter too and now will start as great grand-daughter gets old enough. I am not overweight (5ft 7in., 124 lbs) but my health is questionable with my kidney transplant and a few other minor issues. I just hope to gather (with my brothers) enough to help them out in case of any emergencies.

Your right about preparing for ordinary things that could happen, not just disasters. I been out work going on three months. It pays to be prepared . You never know what life will deal you down the road.

Also keep doing your chores on a regular basis. Do not let the dishes and laundry pile up until it's going to take hours to get it done. If something happens suddenly you don't want to be stuck with a mountain of dirty dishes and unclean laundry. It might be harder to get it done if suddenly you have no electricity or running water.

Here is my list of 5 things NOT to do: 1) Do not add to your debt (pay off that credit card in full every month or just stop using it for every day expenses), 2) Do not waste your free time watching TV, playing video games or texting on the smart phone (limit electronics to 1 hr. per day and use your free time for a 2nd job, taking classes or getting training), 3) Do not ignore your health (get annual check-ups, regular immunizations, get dental care, update those prescription lenses, eat low fat whole foods...), 4) Do not choose convenience over frugality (make your meals from scratch instead of getting fast food, brew your own coffee instead of going to the Starbucks drive-thru, learn how to mend your clothes instead of buying new repacements...) and 5) Do not assume you are competent in a survival skill if you do not practice it regularly (reading about it or watching a video about it or going camping once a year is NOT good enough).

My list…#1 stop obsessing about firearms, people should not know how you are armed! #2 stop the conspiracy theory subject matter in videos, concentrate on real things. #3 stop believing whatever you read and see and do some real, independent research for yourself BEFORE you form an opinion #4 stop paying for preps just because they're tacti-cool or marketed toward preppers #5 stop being a cell-phone zombie! Look around or life will pass you by while you're staring at that little screen!

For your area, Eric, the 6 months of water is going to be a challenge in a desert environment. Great items for consideration that were discussed. If most people prepare for the everyday stuff (job loss, catastrophic illness, local (neighbourhood, city wide, county wide and regional disasters). Stuff that has a low impact but high probability of happening, then you'll be covered for about 95% of stuff that could ever happen.

Thank you for the information. I live in South Florida and I think I am ready for a Hurricane, and trying to get ready for more. I went through 2 Hurricane in one month in 2004. That was fun!

#1) Fitness
Fitness videos on prepper channels are the least watched. Hmmm...
Thanks for sharing, keep up the good work!

I think the biggest one on your list is
1. I think 1 of the reasons I stay in the Army Reserve is the fact I will maintain a high physical fitness status then I would if I retired. There are a lot of people who claim to be preppers talking about walking for days to their BOL, and I know most won't make it more than a couple of miles.

I am 68 years old. I have been fortunate to retire with a pension, SS, and a substantial IRA as well as non IRA investments. However there is 1 thing all of us need to prep for and that is retirement and older age. Even it the S doesn't HTF, and it probably won't all of us will get older and live a long life (hopefully). Prepare yourself for that, economically, physically, and emotionally. Aging is inevitable.

Rule # 1, Keep your mouth shut, 2, Don’t own or store anything illegal, 3, Don’t attract attention of any authority including law enforcement.

Unfortunatelly. I am disabled. COPD. So walking a mile would not be a real possiblity. So I prepare in other ways. Use my brain. To read up on practical situations. Meds. Foods. Maps of my area. Water treatment . I do what I can. And try not to dwell on the negative. Thank you for your info. It was very helpfull. 🙏🇺🇸Good luck and God Bless

Nearing 60 yrs there is no way I am going to be able to do half the stuff I used to. I was an Infantry soldier for 9 years and know a little about keeping fits, but I really feel it is so important for people to acknowledge their limitations or you will do yourself some real damage. I can still walk a fair distance with my BOB if I have to, but my wife cannot and I am not leaving her behind. I guess I will be easy pickings for the younger fitter scumbag who might choose to try and take my preps, but be assured, I will not give them up lightly. The one prep that annoys me is how macho men must make fire with ferro rods or flints or bow drills or whatever. I carry BIC lighters in every pocket, every back pack and round my neck and I have never in 40 years been ever let down by it. Yes its cool to show that I can start a fire by making a spark into a fuel source and start a fire, but I can do that so easily with a lighter. Oh and trust me, you can loose a ferro rod just as quickly as a lighter.

Anyone wishing to be physically ready for SHTF, needs only to do the things required for readiness. Proper preparedness demands real work. Work that is NEVER really done. Anyone making the necessary efforts shouldn't need to do additional workouts. Anyone who thinks they are prepared but isn't modestly fit, or is only fit from working out, probably hasn't prepared at all.
I'd hate to think back on the effort wasted working out, when the world is in chaos and I look around me to see all the things that needed done and weren't.

I've been doing this for decades now. For every thing I check off my list, two more are realized during the effort. Preparedness done right IS a fitness program.

Out of Shape Prepper...that could be the name of my vlog if I quit being lazy and started one.

Balance! Good point, I need to review my supplies, I have been working on my skills and collecting books, canning, gardening, repairs etc.

Very good list and discussion. I agree with all of them. Especially preparing for most likely versus most dangerous situations, and having the knowledge to use your gear.

Stop telling people that you are prepping.. all you will get from that is ... called crazy, and they will tell others you're prepping so they can get a good laugh about how crazy you are .... then when things do go south ... the same group that called you crazy will come after your resources.
