Agreed, always have a lighter, but a ferro rod doesn't run out if fuel or mechanically break down.

Always have redundancies, and never have only one of each type of item

It doesn’t take much to carry both so I do but I’m definitely a supporter of doing things the easy way instead of the cool way

A zip lock bag of cotton balls coated in petroleum jelly is also useful. It's light, small, amd can double as a first aid with covering cuts/burns/dry skin.

110%...for real always have my Bic but the rod is always there when I do need it.

Right! I carry 2 mini Bic lighters when I'm backpacking. Never haven't been able to start a fire.

Lol, but it's still good to have the skills to do it without a lighter.

More importantly in this community so I’m learning is a need for a bigger emphasis on the importance of fire building and in inclement weather, with the right skills you can use a the above to start a fire, I’ve learned the hard way practice with your gear! I have some of the best gear on the market for fire starting over 500$ worth usd and I failed to start a fire in my dam back yard with the best gear, learn how!!!

Firefly ferro rod from Tortoise Gear.
I tossed out the plastic toothpick from my medium Victorinox hiker and replaced it with the Firefly ferro rod. It's an excellent back-up just in case. Just brace it well or lay it flat to use it or it'll break. It's pretty tough for such a slender ferro rod.

Always have more than one method of lighting fire!!!

Very small backup ferocerium rods are cheap and light🤗

Both ways you showed where incorrect. you slowly scrape shavings from your rod, with out them sparking then fill your kienlen with the pile you created, and the first spark you throw in to the pile will make the whole thing combust. along with you feeding air to it you got a small fire 🔥 now keep it lit!!! use your rode right . Glad we learned something today.

I never used those Sparky things. They have a thing called a match works beautiful.

Thank you for posting this. Forget about trying romanticize fire starting. A small bic lighter for example has one hour of burn time, or 1800 lights lasting two seconds. And when the butane runs out you can still produce a spark from the ferro.

Matches, Ferro, and lighter. Keep all of them in your pack, keep all of them secure, keep your odds of coming out on top high.

Always have a lighter and a rod as a backup. Use what modern ease of use technology Yiu have and if all else fails you have a ferro rod as back up
