Dr Jones' Free Book

A new study from the University of Missouri concludes that 'There was no significant correlation between the national DCM incidence rate or the individual breed groups in relation to the grain-free pet food sales.'

'Nationally, the data did not support a significant change in percent DCM over time, from 2000 to 2019'

Meaning looking at 70000 dogs referred to veterinary cardiologists, they saw the rate of DCM staying at 3.9%, and they saw no correlation to DCM and Grain Free Pet Food Sales.

Dr Jones comments on the study and sheds some light on this Dog Food Fiasco...

The study:
Incidence of Canine Dilated Cardiomyopathy Diagnosed at Referral Institutes and Grain-Free Pet Food Store Sales: A Retrospective Survey..

I'm so happy to hear this. Because my dog's skin has totally improved since feeding him grainfree food.

I have a Siberian Husky that I have had since he was 8 weeks old and he is fixing to turn 13 years old September/11 . From the first day I brought him home he has been on a grain free diet and is as healthy as a horse. He has never had any stomach issues at all. I started him out on Taste of the Wild brand High Prairie but since then I found a much better brand, Orijen is what I feed him now along with home cooked beef stew meat with carrots, broccoli, zucchini and spinach and every once in a while I'll add chicken or beef liver to his meals. You would never know he was fixing to turn 13. One Happy Pup Mom, and One Healthy Old Pupperoni Boy.🐺❤

I believe there IS a correlation….My healthy 2yr old Old English Sheepdog was fine until after about a year on grain-free kibble …when we ran him in play he started coughing hard after a short time running … this went on for months, when I thought it might be contributed to the grain free food we took him off and started him on kibble with grains… The coughing cleared up and he no longer has a coughing problem and he was out of breath when he ran hard… I am convinced it was due to the food

What I would like to see is a total number of dogs diagnosed with DCM and how many eat grain inclusive and how many eat grain free foods. I bet if the numbers came out, we would see no increase in DCM when comparing grain free versus grain inclusive. I mean, 515 dogs is such a small number of the millions of dogs in the US...seems like a blown up panic for nothing! Thank you for giving us this new information.

I wonder if the panic was started by the traditional pet food companies since grain free had become so popular. They couldn't bear to lose any share of the market.

Thank you! It's finally so gratifying to know that staying on grain free for my dog has been the right decision all along. Really appreciate your input

I have a few questions, I've recently taken my dog to a new veterinary, and I regret it because they didn't help him. They didn't use the niddle to remove all the liquid found in his belly tissue, the veterinary only removed a sample. He had low Iron in his blood <22%, but didn't receive transfusion, they wanted to do everything after an ecography, and said he was helpless. They didn't seat to talk with us, it all happened in the corridor. They decided to keep my dog one night for observation instead of proceeding to the ecography, and again they said my dog was helpless. They insisted that taking him to another city to do the ecography would kill him, so we (me and my family) accepted my dog would stay for observation. However, he didn't receive any treatment besides the serum bag. We went home, and after 2 hours they called us because he had one seizure and they wanted me to euthanized the dog. They didn't give us any further explanation and I felt like didn't help my dog. The reason I've decided to inquire what best procedure would have been, should my dog have received a transfusion, the liquid removed from his belly with the niddle, the ecography that was delayed. Were they only trying to rip people off of their money? Why would they say my dog was helpless? I would be very grateful if you can answer those questions.

Thanks so much Dr. Jones. I really appreciate this follow up. I feed a mix of foods(raw, dehydrated, canned and kibble) but have used grain free for many years with dogs living over 15 years and that's Rottweilers! To me grain is far worse.

What if the thing that's causing increased cardiomyopathy in humans the past couple years is the same sort of thing causing DCM in dogs? I can't imagine anyone will ever pay for a study to figure that one out.

I always fed my dogs BEG foods until the DCM report and one dog started to develop heart issues. I immediately switched to Purina Pro Plan and other Wsava foods. While my one dog with the heart issues improved (her heart murmur resolved itself) my senior boy really seemed to go downhill and he developed tumors It may or may not have had any correlation to the food switch, but neither dog liked eating their food. And the heart murmur did go away after switching from grain free food. I've been feeding them fresh food for the past few months. They love their food and even my old guy, now with suspected cancer, seems to have a little more pep in his step.

I have 4 cats at home in Poland. Since they started to have many illnes, I started to cook for them a chicken brot from chicken legs and water (no salt, no herbs). I cut the meat on small pieces and give each of them a plate of the meat with the chicken brot. They look much better, feel better and they started to have less health issues.
