Thanks for stopping by. This is 2 Minute Classroom and today we are answering the question “What is Psychology?” I’ve enlisted the help of someone who knows more about this topic than I do, so he’ll take it from here.

Psychology is such an interesting topic. Don't you agree? It is so diversified that a person can apply its principles anywhere. Such as persuasion in marketing, behavior with children, and research in science. The word psychology comes from the Greek words psyche meaning soul and logos meaning to study. All that psychology is is the study of the human mind and behavior. It just answers the question: Why do we do the things we do? From its roots, psychology is just philosophy plus experimentation. Because of philosophy the history of psychology is so vast, but that a topic for another time. This is just to introduce you to psychology.

The official start date of psychology when it is recognized as a science is 1879. This is when Wilhelm Wundt created the first psychology laboratory at the University of Leipzig in Germany. Overtime psychology has evolved with many disciplines of study. Nonetheless there are two main branches: experimental and applied.

Experimental psychology deals with research, by way of the scientific method. It answers the questions why and what? Why is this child acting the way he is? What happens in the mind to cause mental disorders? Applied psychology is applying the research from experimental psychology. Counseling can be found here, therapists, clinical psychologists, applied behavior analysis and so on. It answers the question of how? How can I make the world a better place? How can I help this child with bad behavior? How can I help this person overcome a mental disorder? As you can see psychology can soon go off into many directions.

That subject is very interesting, if you become a good psychologist in life, you are supposed to be able to handle situations with everybody, you get to know yourself and get to know a lot about other people's behavior.

I have just begun studying Psychology and i have found it very interesting. In the introduction of Psychology, i have studied and understood the following things - psychology is the scientific approach to understand the differences between individuals and their nature. What determines their personality and how is it making the individual unique in certain aspects.

In psychology, one needs to understand the personality development of individuals - how are many individuals behaving in a certain manner, but still have unique characteristics from each other.

While we study psychology, personality development stages are part of this. Which thing affects your overall personality - physical characteristics, biological or with brain mapping tries to understand which aspects of your nature drive individuals. Many studies prove early stages of childhood development play a critical role in your overall personality.

I'm in high school and considering taking the ap psych class at my school if I ever have an opening in my schedule. I'm always wondering "why" about things and want to learn both the why and how to apply it. Thanks for the video, this was a great overview of what I could be getting into with that class!
