Why Was Jesus Baptized? - Bishop Barron's Sunday Sermon

Friends, the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord is exceptionally important. All four Gospels talk about it, and John the Baptist is a kind of door we have to go through to understand Jesus properly. What was John the Baptist doing in the desert? Why did the Messiah, the Lord, go to him for a baptism of repentance? And why do we still spend time with this strange, puzzling, and even embarrassing event?

I've been in the Catholic faith for almost 17 years. I was baptized Roman Catholic. In spite of the years, the memory of the moment of my baptism, and the day after, is still so vivid for some odd reason. I still remember when the leader of the RCIA asked me how I felt, I tried to find words to describe that glorious, exciting, and joyful moment. However, I ended up murmuring, just wondering why, next morning to the night of my baptism, the scenery from the window of my bedroom looked so colorful and so clear, clearer than ever that I could see tiny details of God's beautiful creation that I'd never seen before. As if I was blind, and now I could see clearly!

Thank you, Bishop Barron. The baptism of Jesus is "embarrassing". So it is the mass when Jesus offers Himself as a holocaust for my sins. Real love, which is always sacrificial, is "embarrassing" as it takes on the sins of others, even though it is sinless! (Fr. Alex Rebello - 81 years)

I was baptized on May 21, 1950. No I don’t remember anything about the baptism, but, nonetheless, I am very happy my mother and father got me baptized. I was put in a group of Catholics, that have their original sin erased, because of the baptism. Thank you John the Baptist, and Jesus Christ for bringing me to that Holy practice of Baptism.

"JOHN is kind of door" of Bishop reminds me of, the liturgy of Syro Malankara Catholic Church, also known West Syrian/Antiochean liturgy. The public service of Holy Eucharist, starts " May Mary who bore you and John the Who baptised you may intercede for us, have mercy on us. They are the two human beings who introduces Jesus, the Christ to us. God bless your ministry.

Bishop thanks to you ! i am getting to understand better Catholicism. I was raised as catholic, went to catholic school, but I was so opposed to catholic ways, till recently!
