my 2008 Mazda 3 Hatchback has 376, 892 miles as of this morning. Major parts are original. I changed the armbars due to rough driving. Changed the driver door knob. Want to see this baby go all the way up to 500K miles.

Mazda 3 has 191 HP and does not have a cvt

civic type R really shouldn't even be part of the conversation considering it is nearly TWICE as expensive.

I will always chose a Mazda...underrated cars! The reliability is insane, been driving my 3 for 7 years from brand new and not a single issue to speak of.

Love my 4th gen Mazda 3! Absolutely stunning car, awesome interior, and with blind spot monitors and a reverse cam there aren't any visibility issues to complain about.

Consumer reports says the Mazda is actually more reliable than the Civic, and given the well known issues reported with the civic (engine oil contamination) it makes sense. Plus I think CR is far more reliable than JD Powers. CR is a nonprofit that is not affiliated with any manufacturer, whereas JD gets all of its money from the very manufacturers it is evaluating. No possibility of bias there right?

Mazda ftw. Despite its basic structure/chassis being old compared to the all new civic, the mazda still kicks ass in the sub compact car segment.

Got the Mazda 3 and paid under msrp, every Honda dealer wanted to stick it to me. Very nice comfy car with zero complaints.

Pointless observation by all the Honda fanboys. I'm a previous 2003 Honda Accord EX-V6 owner, too. So, I’m coming from a place of eleven years of owning a Honda. I owned it till 2014. It was a great car—dependable, alright but not exceptional. Honda is down a few notches of the reliability roster lately. Mazda is second to Toyota. It's pathetic that consumers don’t do substantial research and make decisions based on some observations done years ago. The only reason Honda looks a little better these days is all thanks to Mazda. Mazda has showed mainstream car brands that just because a car is built at a price point doesn’t mean that it must look like a bland and an uninspiring shit-box. MAZDA ALL DAY FOR ME. Mazda is the only brand that breaks away from the pack to do what they’re enthusiastic in creating. A car is not just about touchscreens. Bland and uninspiring consumers will always move in herds towards what the easy choice is. There will never be changes there. But consumers who like a little bit of thrill will gravitate towards vehicles that are created to give the thrills. I can boldly say that Mazda is the only company right now that has been able to crack that fine balance of dependability, exterior and interior designs, and an array of intricate and exceptional engineering.

Love my 2019 AWD Mazda 3. The AWD is the trump card, the car handles like it's on rails. No comparison between AWD and FWD for performance.

I have a Civic and my sister has a Mazda 3. I find regular maintenance is cheaper for the Mazda.

We have already had to replace my wifes hondas CVT transmission. It's is in the early stages of going bad again after approximately 75k miles. Will never buy another CVT transmission vehicle again.

My wife has a Civic Sport and I have a Mazda 3 Sport. They both have their strengths and we love them both, I couldn't pick a winner.

Had a 2016 Maz 3 Hatch. When I test drove the 2020 Maz 3 for a trade, I rejected the vague Torsion Beam Suspension instantly. The look of the car is splendid, with an equally pleasing interior. BUT, we are surrounded by our Mojave Mountains and it's ALL ABOUT HANDLING around here.
Instead, we bought the last one of the new Gen X Civics, which handled far more briskly (Independent Rear Suspension)with great road/driver communication, for our Daily driver.
We love it and the 35mpg AVR out of our 1.5T is excellent. Best of all, not a single problem in 55k miles!

Sorry I couldn't do the CVT and my other half won't drive stick so Mazda it is. CVT is a deal breaker.

I should also mention Mazda sold me at MSRP and Honda wanted $4000 over MSRP lol

My Mazda 3 drives as well today as it did in 2005. In that time, I’ve only had to replace a sensor and battery and tires. It doesn’t have Bluetooth or cameras, but I still get to enjoy the leather seats and sunroof. It’s the best car I’ve ever owned, just beating out my Honda CRX.

The civic looks like someone just hit the Bevel button on the design software lol

A lot of people don't know much about this topic but you also have to mention that the automatic civics only come with a cvt. The Si and Type-R are only manual while the Mazda 3 sedan and hatch do not have cvts in any trim. Mazda's come equipped with a 6 speed manual or 6 speed automatic. That is very important when talking about reliability, although cvts have better gas mileage, they do not last long and are expensive to maintain/repair.
I would pick mazda not only because I avoid cvts like the plague but Mazda does a beautiful job with their designs.
