CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Adhemar (Rufus Sewell) tries to embarrass William (Heath Ledger) by having him show off a dance from his country.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
Heath Ledger stars as William Thatcher, a low-born 14th century squire who, in a fit of inspired spontaneity, replaces his deceased employer as the competitor at a jousting competition. Jousting is a pastime only permitted to knights, who are of noble birth, but Thatcher wins and decides to continue his new pursuits. With the help of his two fellow squire friends Wat and Roland (Alan Tudyk and Mark Addy) and none other than the gambling-addicted Geoffrey Chaucer (Paul Bettany), Thatcher has soon adopted a false identity and is winning one joust after another on his way to a championship in London. His victories inspire the affection of a female fan, Jocelyn (Shannyn Sossamon), and the ire of a competitor, Count Adehmar (Rufus Sewell), but Thatcher's ruse is threatened with exposure.

As someone who is somewhat critical of period pieces that are so inaccurate it’s distracting…I love this move. The mix of contemporary fashion and music is so good because it doesn’t take itself seriously and has fun with it. Underrated movie.

What I love about this scene is that it transitions from how a courtly dance in the Middle Ages may have actually looked like into something that could communicate to us what these dances felt like to the people who went to them. It's like you're getting into their mindset and seeing things from their point of view. That's what makes this film so great - Medieval crowds never chanted 'We Will Rock You' at jousting tournaments, but they absolutely would've because tournaments to them were like the Super Bowl and a rock concert rolled into one.

i remember seeing this when it came out. sitting there thinking "this sounds so familiar, " then the "An-gel" line, and I thought, "no, this cannot be." Everyone in the theater laughed and clapped when the Bowie dropped. One of the best audience reactions I've ever heard.

One thing I’ve always loved about this scene is the slow build up of David Bowie’s Golden Years. How it starts as medieval music, then sprinkles in Bowie, before finally becoming the full song. You don’t see that in movies anymore.

1:45 I love how Heath Ledger smiles at this extra. It’s a small window into who he was as a person. So sweet!

This dance scene, even though it's obviously choreographed, Heath and Shannyn's movements look very organic. It's a dance that almost anyone can do and it feels free-spirited and light. They just flow together with such ease and you can see they enjoyed it.

I closed down a bar in Prague in 2003 and was drinking with some locals. I asked what they did for a living and they said, “We’re accountants.” Turns out they did movie payrolls. I asked if they had ever worked a movie I might be familiar with. They said, “You ever heard of A Knights Tale?” I bought them shots and they told me about being on set and how much fun they had. Very cool folks.

i think it's fascinating how sewell can keep his eyes that focused. he completely gets the message through without even having to show any facial expressions. it takes years and years of practice to pull something like that off. props to him
