The Camel Spider

A short animation I did a few years ago showing off how Camel Spiders, though horrific-looking, are actually pretty tame. I made it because after reading up on them I realized that there were dozens of crazy rumors about them. They do walk up to people, but only to hide in their shadows and escape the hot sun.

That, and they aren't really spiders. They're solifuges which is in the same family as scorpions.

When my dad was in the army, he had to do guard duty. When they turned the floodlights on as he started his shift, these things would come rushing into his shadow, and there wasn't much he could do without seeming unprofessional. So he just had about 4 permanent attandants

Fun fact camel spiders scream when they chase humans, but it's not because they are mean or hungry....it's cause they are sun sensitive and it hurts them so they run at us while screaming

I find it so cute they would go up to humans and hide in their shadows like humans are worth it to risk for shade.

I don't care if they're "surprisingly tame", they've got fangs, can move rather quickly for short sprints and they *JUMP*.

Fun fact: The "camel spider" is not exactly a spider/arachnid, but a member of the Solifugae class in that family, which are not classified as true scorpions or spiders (close, but with key differences). They have 8 legs with the two false legs at the front to serve as antennae.

The good news is that their bite is not venomous; they crush their prey with sheer force and don't need a toxin for defense.

Their name also translates to (loosely) "Those That Hide From The Sun", so you will commonly find them in shady areas. Shocking at first, but try to be calm when you see them and use a bucket to lure them in and release them where another shady area is, like a rock outcrop.

They were known to be verry vicious and chased humans for miles to kill them.
Turned out they just want to relax in youre shade, harmless animal. not even a real spider.

How to get yelled/laughed at for an hour by your CO 101: Step 1: Have arachnophobia. Step 2: Never have heard/seen a camel spider. Step 3: Be your squads S.A.W.(squad automatic weapon) Step 4: Be afraid of jump scares. Step 5: Not notice camel spider till it is less then 4 ft away from you. Step 6: Use 30 rounds on said camel spider in panic. Step 7: Notice your that your entire squad was behind you and saw everything and your CO was the guy closest behind you.(was on point) Step 8: Feel ashamed that you just panicked while on point. Step 9: Feel accomplished that every single one of those 30 rounds you used hit that spider.



My squad mates will never let me live this down and tell everyone they meet the above story.
