I think it's funny how surprisingly SQUISHY these arachnids are. Even though they have their exoskeletons, all the videos I see of them, they behave very squishy, like there's nothing rigid to them at all!

I'd never seen one of these before until one just attacked my dog in my house. My dog freaked out and killed it after it bit him. It must have really hurt, because I've never heard the dog make sounds like that ever before. (I immediately got online and looked them up and was marginally relieved to learn their bite is painful, but not venomous.) I love creepy crawlies, especially spiders, but I now have this dead monstrosity under an overturned glass, and even stone-cold dead, I'm terrified of it! It has a frickin' beak and it's HUGE. I don't know how this beast got in the house (probably hitched a ride inside on the dog, because I'd just taken him out a few minutes before the skirmish), but I'm scared to go outside ever again. Not even joking. OMG.


[EDIT (3 months later): I posted the above comment immediately after my dog had the run-in with the camel spider while I was still pumped up on adrenaline. I've since calmed down and done a lot more reading and research on them — learning, among other things, that they're not even spiders, though they are arachnids — and I'm not freaked out by them any more. I've seen a couple more out in the yard and found another one in the house last week. It was chilling on a wall, minding its own business. I was able to capture it under a glass and take it outside. I'm glad it didn't run, because then I probably would have panicked only because they run crazy fast, but it went well and the little fella is in the wild again. I wouldn't want a whole mess of them to move into my house, but a little education goes a long way toward making things like this a lot less scary.]

I'm not that scared of most spiders but this thing is something else. I know it's not dangerous but god damn, just look at that thing. Especially those fangs. I couldn't be more glad that we're too big to be prey to things like this.
