I live in an apartment and I have access to the roof. In containers on the roof I've planted tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, radishes, collard greens, eggplant, celery, potatoes, and yellow crookneck squash. In the landing to the stairs leading to the roof I've got thyme, basil, mint, oregano sage, and lavender growing. They all require some hours of shade and the roof gets sun all day, no shade. The stair herbs are growing hung in pockets on the wall so as not to block the stairs. So far so good. Tending my mini garden gives me so much pleasure and an excuse to get outside and get some sun. We are still in lockdown here and my garden is good for my mental health. It's encouraging to see things grow. No the yield will not be great but it is life affirming and that is the greater yield .

The key, as you’ve mentioned before is to practice your gardening skills sooner, rather than later. It’s one thing to lose a crop during the good times, whereas losing a crop when your family is counting on it can be quite demoralizing. Thanks for another great video!

Chamomile, not only is it a calmative, it is an anti-inflammatory. And because it is a flower that is mostly used, it is a source of vitamin K. Also, for your balcony garden or rooftop garden, a climbing rose is essential. Why? The four or five-petal rose is also known as a "tudor rose". It can grow in almost any climate. The flowers attract bees and other pollinators. The flower petals are edible and in India they make a syrup that is used to flavor milk or simply water. The seeds are called a rosehip and once oragne red to deep red, they can be harvested and dried out and when needed, crushed into a teaball to brew a super vitamin C rich rosehip tea. It is a good tasting tea and the dried hips will last for years in a tight lid jar kept in a cool, dark, dry place. Great tea for those long winter months. If living in a cold winter climate? The plant will drop its leaves and simply gather and mulch under the plant to feed it for the next year. Canes getting too long? Pinch the end off (be sure to mulch it under the plant) and take control of where it goes and how far. Feed it once a year with some wood ash and calcium and some compost every two years and it will serve you and your family for many years to come.

Leaves of sweet potato plants are edible. Boil them as a spinach substitute. A plant I think should be on the list especially if you live in the US is lambsquarter. My ancestors cultivated the plant, it grows in just about any kind of soil. The young leaves can be eaten raw, or boiled. Older leaves can be eaten by boiling them. They have more nutrition than spinach. The seeds can be sprouted easily and eaten as sprouts or roasted. you can take the seeds and grind them into a powder to be used to make breads. The roots can be used to make a soap.

I am growing salad, tomatoes, pak Choi, mustard, radish, sweet potato, broccoli, and my favourite cabbage. Have sown collards, more lettuces, more Chinese veggies. Having to rid aphids ...I made a mistake of bringing in a plant from outside....aphids came with it. Hmmm. Irish springs soap kills it happily. Must be the tallow. Looking forward to sowing many more veggies and fruits. I started indoor gardening 3 months ago, it’s been great. I will grow just about anything ...chickpeas and cowpeas from my cupboard. The cow peas survived. Happy planting!

Also good to think about things that grow fast. Radishes - at 28 days is probably your fastest root veggie, microgreens - 10 days, potatoes, garlic take a whole season. Arugula, spinach should be quick as well.

Bean sprouts! Just need a jar with a screen or cheese cloth and in a week you have a full container of nutritious sprouts to top your beans and rice, etc. I'm told many beans can be sprouted - especially lentils. I've only tried broccoli seeds which are delicious with just a few drops of lemon juice. After mature, they keep in the refrigerator for over a week.

Beet leaves are awesome. I keep a container of over seeded beets to purposely harvest the leaves. I've been doing it now for I think 5 years now. I highly recommend it. It's so cheep and easy to do.

Purslane is another fantastic vegetable to grow in apartments or outside and is typically considered a weed. you usually see the succulent like plants growing out of your sidewalk if you have sidewalk or out of the ground .you can buy them at Seed stores or online. It has more omega-3 fatty acids in any other vegetable .grow super easy super fast makes tons of seeds and you can keep regrowing it all year inside you can clip them when they're big or you can clip them real small and grow them as microgreens. it's an excellent source of vitamin A C and potassium as well as dietary fiber. You can eat it fresh on salads or on sandwiches or you can let it go a little big and you can cook it like spinach.

I live in UK and I can confirm pepper plants and spring onions are growing really well on the windowsill (as is the Golden Virginia tobacco - upto at least 1 foot) What didn't survive included: spinach and basil

May I suggest people look into apartment composting - you may want to do a video on it.

Container gardening can be a bit hit and miss. But if you first make sure to use food-grade buckets that should start you on the correct path.

Manually pollinating tomatoes doesn't require the Qtip method described in this video and actually might not work without damaging the blossom. It's easier to hand pollinate tomatoes. The blossom of tomatoes already contains the male and female pollen. To mix them, simply spend about 20 seconds tapping each bloom. The male pollen stored high in the blossom will fall down onto the female pollen contained closer to the blossom opening. Or, if you have access to one, you can hold the back edge (not the part you put in your mouth) of an electric toothbrush against the upper part of the blossom to vibrate the pollen so it falls down. Love your videos. You bring up many things I hadn't thought of.

Also, Robert Griswold, owner Ready made Resources, based in Tennessee, said months ago on youtube as he was being interviewed, Robert said a person or persons can survive in an apartment, BUT YOU WILL NEED WATER. I agree with him. Feel free to contact him as he is on social media. I telephoned him a few months ago, and ordered products from his company.

I’ve found tomatoes are never wonderful ripened in my apartment, however, once they begin blooming in the spring, i whip out a small paint brush and my tomatoes are earlier than anyones, once they can be put back out on my front porch. This apartment is also blessed with a huge front south facing window, which keeps my wintered vegies happy all winter. I also sprout seeds for salads all winter.
