Actually a good tip and next time you're at a hardware store, buy one of the large sharpeners they sell for the flat sided pencils used by carpenters.

I have one which I keep in a small plastic case along with a few sections of 1/2" wood dowel, inside my pack, but normally use tinder I've made from wood shavings with my knife or from dryer lint which I keep in a small plastic bag in the bottom of my pack.

Some folks carry a sharpener just for this purpose.
It is alao very good if you have young children with you and they want to help you make the fire but are too little for other tools.
Keeps them safely occupied while they contribute.
