I think we should go easy on the Eritrea student. We should respect his opinion. It just means we should share/educate more on the institution he is studying in. By name calling him, it makes us malaysians look bad. Every person that ben interviewed thinks malaysians are friendly in general. We should live up to our reputation, not ruin it.

Eriteria's comment is honest and well meant and perhaps UM would be open to hear his feedbacks about the further improvement of undergraduate programs and the facilities. It is one of the oldest university in the world and maintaining buildings and facilites in such a climate is a challenge. I love walking on the grounds of the some of the older universities than newer ones - somehow most of them are placed in hilly places which is great for exercising 😁

I don't know if those people can differentiate between real Malaysian people or just some immigrants or fellow tourist.... because in Malaysia, you can hardly tell

The guy from Eritrea seemed smart, but he also looked a bit mesmerized by the American dream. Remember, the power lies within you—no education, anywhere, will make a difference without your own capability, commitment, and discipline. Don’t get caught up in rankings or places like MIT. You’re already on the path, so keep pursuing the dream, the African dream, the Malaysian dream, the Indian dream …etc. The American dream is not all it’s made out to be—I had to learn that the hard way, even after 20 years‼️

4:00 as an alumni of University of Malaya, I loved the time I was in there. Maybe some refurbishment (especially the washrooms) or repaint needed, but I certainly do not want the old rustic buildings to go away. They represented the long history of UM.

Um is not a scam, it's not about the building, area or looking old it's about the programs and it's recognized or endorsed in the world dude.

He made it sound like UM is a school that is in the middle of the jungle. Just because the facilities are old, doesn't make it a scam. It's amongst the most reputable school in Asia

Thank you for the insightful content. As a Malaysian, I truly appreciate hearing diverse perspectives and experiences from foreigners about Malaysia, whether positive or negative. Such viewpoints are invaluable as they help us identify and address issues that we, as locals, might overlook due to our familiarity with the environment. Thus, foreign opinions are incredibly beneficial. Thank you, sir! Please continue creating content like this!

Claiming Malay language has no grammar is utterly ignorant. I'm Malaysian with Tamil as mother tongue but has been teaching Malay for about 20 years. I don't blame the African student, blame it on our own people. We make our national language a joke all the time.

I kinda teared a little when i heard you were saying “lets hope for the best for you and me, for us to be staying here for a long time”. Ben, you made me cried a little. Thank you for loving this little underrated country. Its an honour to be hearing all those amazing compliments about Malaysia ❤❤❤

I am visiting KL for 7 nights with my wife and grown up kids (25 and 24 years old) in January 2025. I love Ben’s vlogs and I am really looking forward to visiting it now. It’s great to see so many races and cultures all getting along in relative harmony when there is so much division in the world❤

UPDATE: Ben have edited and deleted certain parts of the video so the original comments below might be a bit out of the picture.
Universiti Malaya isn't perfect, but calling it a 'scam' is just irresponsible. Coming from Eritrea, one of the least developed countries even by African standards, where their best university isn’t even close to 9, 000th place in world rankings, and then calling UM a 'scam'? Really?
There are hundreds of students from more developed countries studying in UM including China and they really love the place. He is really ungrateful of UM and the opportunity he got to study outside his country Eritrea (which I don't expect he will want to return and live there).

I think we all need to learn to take other opinions in and see from their perspectives. Personally, I'm grateful that the guy from Eritrea was being honest in the interview. However, as many has said in the comments, the rank is not based on the structures and layouts of the university. It is mostly based on the courses which are being offered there, and the post-graduates' success in finding jobs after they finished their studies. The data doesn't lie, and it's being recognized internationally so calling it as a scam just because you have to walk further than expected sounds unfair.

I do agree on his point about giving more attentions to the current students' situations there. If UM is one of the best universities because of the academic aspect, it doesn't hurt to improve on the other aspects as well, yes? I feel like the guy was an honest guy, but lack maturity in making his comments; but at the same time i think it was not his intention to humiliate UM. Hope my fellow Malaysians can show an example by remaining respectful and matured; we aren't perfect and other people's opinions matter too. Thanks for the video Ben, cheers :)
