"When you stand before God, you cannot say that 'I was told by others to do thus' or that 'virtue was not convenient at the time'. This will not suffice. Remember that."

Powerful quote.

Norton has about 15 minutes of screen time in this movie and still gives the absolute best performance of his career. His demeanor is perfect. Chilling.

“Not only because it’s expedient, but because it is right….Protect the helpless.”

What a true king should be.

My favorite scene in the film. “ Remember, you’re soul is in your keeping.”

A king may move a man, a father may claim a son, but that man can also move himself, and only then does that man truly begin his own game. Remember that howsoever you are played or by whom, your soul is in your keeping alone, even though those who presume to play you be kings or men of power. When you stand before God, you cannot say, 'But I was told by others to do thus, ' or that virtue was not convenient at the time. This will not suffice. Remember that.

What's ironic is Baldwins disease is probrably what made him such a humble king kind hearted king and not an arrogant king like so many others. He knew what his destiny would be eventually, arrogant kings think they can conquer death.

I like how the King really stresses to Bailin the concept of personal responsibility and accountability, and in regarding the latter, no matter what the circumstances might be, ultimately he is responsible for the choices and decisions he makes, and ultimately he is the one who will have to reap the consequences of them.

"You reap what you sow."

I love how instead of being upset and feeling disrespected when Balian disapproves of his strategy, King Baldwin actually asks him what could be done to improve it, take criticism, and praises him. He is open to suggestion and this, along with the line, "all are welcome in Jerusalem", shows that he was a great king. He was open to different interpretations.

When King Baldwin says “when I was 16 I won a great victory” he is referencing a real battle that took place during the Crusades near Tel Gezer, in modern Israel/Palestine of today. It was called the battle of Montgisard. And he really was 16. And Saladin was sent fleeing on a pack camel because the Crusaders routed the Ayyubid Muslim army.

One of the greatest kings to ever live, may king Baldwin rest in peace 🕊

King Baldwin IV did not deserve to be called or to be remembered as the "Leper King", it's disrespectful. His capabilities and accomplishments as a king should not be overshadowed by this illness. He was a king, like the rest of the great kings who lived before, during, and after his time. People must focus on his achievements, strength and bravery as a knight of the cross instead of what killed him.

King Baldwin IV must be remembered as the defender of his beloved Jerusalem, a king who loved his people, a king who did not assume to be above God. He did incredibly well for a very little amount of time, but he left a legacy in the history of mankind that'll last for a lifetime. Baldwin IV was the king of the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem.

my favorite quote of the movie

imagine the amount of bloodshed that could have been prevented in human history if the people who call themselves religious followed those words

“All are welcome in Jerusalem. Not only because it’s expedient but because it is right. Protect the helpless.”

There is a reason why Baldwin is remembered as one of the best Kings in Christendom despite his short life.

One of the most potent scenes and monologues I've ever heard in a movie. This part was really poignant to me when I first saw this movie back in 2005 and it's even more so today.

I legitimately did not know that Edward Norton was in this, or acting behind a mask! But this is such proof that he's a hell of an actor!

His wisdom and humility honestly give me inspiration to be better everyday. I hope I become half as wise and gracious as Baldwin in my lifetime.

For a man who lived such a short life and spent most of it dealing with the bloodshed and politics of war he seemed like a very humble king.

So much wisdom coming from a man not even 30

While I’m not religious Baldwin’s speech about your soul remaining yours, not kings or men of power, is simply great.

And for any who haven’t seen it, I would really recommend the director’s cut of Kingdom of Heaven, which this scene is taken from. It has a whole subplot added back in and many scenes are extended or reinserted to give more characters more screen time.
