The thing is that there CAN be a bottleneck such as if you have Gen 3 NVMe and you use it on a mobo that only have Gen 4 NVMe slot the SSD would only goes upto Gen 3 speed not 4

Don't even have a desktop tower that has ddr4 RAM, i don't think i need higher than a four or even a three

You should explain that sequential transfer rates are meaningless (those big MB/sec figures she is giving) and that it is your random, low queue depth read and write performance that determines your user experience and how fast your computer feels.

In this respect, Gen 4 and 5 NVMe SSDs are NOT any faster than Gen 3 because these random read and write speeds are largely limited by the megatransfers per second of the actual NAND storage chips. In other words....you could do a blind test and there isnt a person alive who could detect the difference between a Gen 3, 4 or 5 NVMe SSD.

This is where Intel Optane came in as it was a completely different form of storage and it finally broke through those random read and write performance barriers....after Intel discontinued optane however, the closest you can find now are the all SLC NAND enterprise drives that get really close to optane in performance.
