I have an honest question, my brother. I have a friend who is, long story short, very unhappy in his marriage as well as their spouse. They remain in this marriage with the excuse that, and I quote, “the Bible says we should only get divorced if fornication happens”. While I don’t condone divorce, I tell them that God does not want his children to be in an unhappy purposeless marriage, but he harps on the fact that God will punish him if he gets divorced outside the reason of fornication. Please help me with a possible answer for them.

the exception, in Matthew is fornication, not have meanings....and there is a reason that both words, fornication and adultery are being used, in the same sentence...

There is only one sin that will not be forgiven and that is blasphemy against the holy spirit. It's clear in the word that, that is the only sin that will not be forgiven.

the exception is fornication....not adultery, and not abuse...this is where I take issue, with this teaching....Erasmus changed pornea, from fornication, to sexual immorality...and toyed with the idea of making abandonment, by a non believer another exception...both are non Biblical teachings....for divorce and remarriage....divorce is not the issue....because if one were to separate, the options are twofold....remain unmarried, or remarry....

It would seem from 1st Corinthians 7:39 that God would have us marry another Christian. I don't think just because we are not under the law we have library to marry an unbeliever. It would be better for us to follow what Paul said in 1st Corinthians 7:39.
