00:00 Things Your Barber Wants You To Know Introduction

Good personal grooming is one of the cornerstones for a modern gentleman’s lifestyle but as much as you might enjoy taking charge of your own grooming routine, there are just some things that really are better left to the professionals.

00:35 Our Barbers

Simon, or “Si”, is the owner of Stilo cuts based on Hennepin Avenue in Minnesotta
Rick who works at Swagger & Jack’s in Norwich (knorr-ich)

01:18 #1 - Whether you’re actually showing up
01:58 #2 - What kind of haircut you want
02:30 #3 - Wash your hair!
03:28 #4 - Don’t wear a tight hat before your haircut
03:57 #5 - When the clippers are on, stay still!
04:46 #6 - Don’t keep checking your reflection
05:46 #7 - Your beard might not be as good as you think
06:42 #8 - No eye contact during a mustache trim
07:00 #9 - Your barber can hear you just fine!
07:36 #10 - Stay away from divisive conversation topics
08:03 #11 - Keep some things to yourself!
08:40 #12 - Keep phone calls brief
09:00 #13 - If your child is with you, be realistic
09:14 #14 - Don’t have your spouse dictate the haircut
09:37 #15 - Only insecure barbers care if you “cheat”!
10:10 #16 - Know how your own hair grows
10:33 #17 - Don’t ask for a redo right at the end
11:21 #18 - If possible, pay (& tip) right away

Ultimately, when it comes to getting a haircut, your main goal is to come away looking and feeling great. It’s all about being relaxed and trusting your barber. They know what they’re doing, and want you to enjoy the experience.

On barbers not being mind readers: On my very first trip to my favorite barber, I sat in the chair and she asked me, "Do you want your usual?" I had no idea who she thought I was, but I said, "Sure." She may not have been a mind reader, but she could apparently see the future as the cut was exactly what I wanted. Sadly, she's retired now.

I think finding and supporting a good barber is just as great as finding and supporting a tailor. I try to tip generously and once you’ve found one that suits you, it’s a pleasure having someone who knows how to make you look your best. Also, I’ve found being a good customer (keeps appointments and times and tips kindly) will grant you the occasionally needed emergency appointment or service. Great video!

How about a video defining what’s a fade, quiff, undercut, layering, etc.? It’s hard to know what to ask for

When I get ok to good service I always over tip (20%+) for three reasons (two self serving-ish, one positive): Being a good tipper gets you remembered in a positive light and liked, people that like you tend to work harder for you, and some extra dollars aren't a big deal but the person receiving it will hopefully feel appreciated and it may make a hard day easier to get through.

Barber here. Thank you for your service.
*on point 18, the shop usually takes 50% or more. (At least in my country)

What you said about missed appointments applies to my friend the dog groomer too.
Same difference

When I was a kid my dad cut my hair and cleaned up my neck with a straight razor. As a teen my best friend and next door neighbor and I always cut each other’s hair. Great memories!
After getting frustrated with my local barbers I started cutting my own hair. It’s perfect every time!

Wow! What a good video. Practical advice which smooths such an important experience for both parties.

I think it's very rude to take a phone call while in any situation like this. I used to have patients taking phone calls during appointments with me in general practice. I had 10 minute appointments and their calls would often make me late for the next patients. It's rude and thoughtless. Turn your phone off for the time you're in your appointment, just call people back after if you've missed their call.

The mirror is one of their tools. Swiveling around takes the tool out of their hand.

My grandfather was a barber, if you didn't sit still he held you in place. Grown men too, not just kids.

What if you use oil-based pomade? Should you de-grease before going in?

Know what you want... I cut my hair with the same guy for 45 years, when I had to change it, unfortunately, and I was asked how you want it cut, I had NO idea! For 40 years I would just sit and my barber would cut it! It took a while to get things right with the new guy...
As for looking at the mirror, I had no problem whatsoever with that, I'm nearsighted and I take my glasses off to get a haircut, so I won't see anything anyway lol

I’ve always enjoyed these kinds of appointments, though I am fairly quiet, not really there to chat and always appreciate anyone who understands that (social anxiety re: small talk) ❤️

While tipping isn’t mandatory here, I still do for anyone who performs any kind of physical labour for me in cash as a thank you. I don’t do it to ensure they’re given a liveable wage, it’s just out of gratitude. I was also raised to tip anyone I see regularly because they will be more willing to go the extra mile for you. My father said “I tip servers through the year so that when it comes to last minute or challenging requests or (like say valentines reservations) they’re more often than not willing to oblige”.

What barber would you recommend in St. Paul? Cheers

I was so shy as a teenager that I was afraid to tell my barber that he was repeatedly cutting my hair in a way I didn't really care for. Then when I was 25 all my hair fell out!🤣🤣

I'd like to see the men grow their beards out for No Shave November and then show us what they look like

Finding a barber is like finding a good wine. Once you found them, you cherish them and treat them with respect.
