Just weeks before the Lok Sabha elections, Election Commissioner of India, Arun Goyal, has resigned. This has left the three-member Election Commissioner of India with a vacancy following Ashok Lavasa's resignation in August 2020. The ECI is now left with only the Chief Election Commissioner, Mr. Rajiv Kumar. This development has sparked a political controversy, with TMC Raj Sabha MP Saket Gokhale expressing concern about the situation. Arun Goyal, a 1985 Batch IAS officer from Punjab Kader, was next in line to become CEC in 2025.
