Election Commissioner Arun Goel tendered his resignation on Saturday, just days before the poll body is set to announce the schedule for the Lok Sabha Election 2024. With Goel’s resignation, the Election Commission of India (ECI) is now just a one-member body headed by the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar. Goel’s departure comes as he had three years left in his tenure.

Is it appropriate for an election commissioner to resign when General election is at door step? Is it not like resigning of Army chief just a day before declaration of war? Had he resigned after election, there was some decency. This can be of either of two reasons, 1) facilitating govt to appoint their loyals, 2) He may be afraid of Hon. SC who is taking Electoral bond issue seriouslyamd even EVM issue.
