What is the best CPU for a new graphics card? That's what I wanted to find out by using the fastest GPU right now, the RTX 4090, to test CPU scaling on AMD Ryzen. Will a 2600X still last for a while?

Could have added the 5800X3D since it's a slot-in upgrade for AM4, and it deals blows with the newest CPUs in some games.

This really needed the 5800X3D in the mix as it makes the most sense if you are thinking about jumping all the way to AM5

Lmao thank you for this. I can’t believe some dude at Canada computers told me my 5600x was too weak for 4090, he even doubled down and said that 3080 to 4090 would see 0 performance gain.

Thank you so much for this, I've been waiting a while for this comparison. I have a 5900x with a 4090 and play at 4k, looking at the charts I don't think I have to upgrade the CPU yet.

I had a 1600 and wanted a 7600 before I added up the cost of the CPU plus new motherboard and RAM. It turns out there are some nice sales on Ryzen 5600 and 5600X CPUs right now.
I'm hopeful that your test results mean my new 5600 will not hold back an RTX 4070 when they release.

Such an interesting perspektive. I am really impressed to see how much that 5600x can hold its own in comparison to such an oversized gpu in terms of budget. Could you do something like this video for an 4080 etc? That would be very valuable and offer something others miss.

I went from a 3600 to a 5800 X 3-D (329 on ebay new) in destiny 2 at 4k. Noticed a huge gain. Was on a 3080. Some areas would drop to 60-70fps. Same with 4090. Then x3d it’s always a constant 120 capped. And 160-200 uncapped.. some areas dip to 130-160 but it’s rare…

Go to a 5600x minimum. X3d if you can spare the change

This makes me feel pretty comfortable. I’m running a 6800+5600X but just recently upgraded to an G9 super ultrawide monitor. Given that it’s just below 4k, the 6800 isn’t bad but definitely could use replacing and I had my eye on the 4090.

I was mildly worried about bottlenecking but based on this vid, I shouldn’t be

We need this for 9900k to 13700k. Great video though Ryzen is a tempting upgrade over intel atm

This is caused by the NVidia scheduling running on the CPU.
And considering that the 4090 has a lot of cores, the cpu the scheduler runs on will probably have a huge impact on GPU utilization.
AMD has a hardware scheduler and are not susceptible to this.
I think HUB did a video on this where the 5700XT was pushing more frames than a 3090 running on a AMD R5 1600.

My 2600x and 2060 are my lovable 1080p pair for living room gaming. They know their place. lol

One major problem with this video.
If you're on am AM4 motherboard a quick and cheaper solution is simply to get the 5800X3D and it will hold you over for a bit. It wins in some games and sits on equal terms in some. Yes, it does lose to the best of the newest Intel and AM5. But it's still producing frames that are far greater than any other 5000 series CPU.

I decided to upgrade my 5600X, I went with 5800X3D and plan to upgrade that later on. 1-2 generations from current newest Intel and AMD.

DDR5 prices would come down by then and hopefully prices in general. Or at the very least it would be a far more substantial increase in performance. I only need to reach 120fps because that is the limit of my 4K TV I use as Monitor.

*_5 years service on mine Sapphire RX 590 SE and still superb performance on 1570 MHz Undervolt pared with Overclocked 2600X to 4.17GHz. Annihilating every game at 1080p._* 🤗

Catch me rocking a Ryzen 5 1600x and an RX6600 at 1080p and still getting almost 100% utilisation on the graphics card :p

That being said, this is super important information for consumers, thank you. It's really hard to know what you *need* to upgrade over what you want to, and balancing a system for your own use case is what is important.

I'm finally thinking of upgrading to a 5600x as my golden 1600x at 4.1ghz all cores can suck down 125w, the same as my RX6600 and I am most interested in efficiency now over anything else

I would love to see a 2600x+1080ti vs 5800x3D/7600x+1080ti comparison

Just bought a 4090 FE for my 5600x rig, purely for 4k DCS. Should nearly double my 3080 fps with more room for that 3D cpu in summer 23. 😉👍🏿

I was on a 1700x when I upgraded my gpu(rx590 -> 6800xt) I knew there would be a bottleneck but I didn’t think that it was as bad as it actually was. I eventually found a 5800x for the right price (used) the frame rates doubled.

Great information
Glad I upgraded my 2600x to a 5800x - I should be ready for a 4080 or 7800xt if I decide I want to do high FPS 1440p or 4k gaming.

I'd love to see the 5800x3d on the chart
Its an interesting option for AM4 owners, but its not clear if it makes a huge difference to someone who already has a 5600x
