I am Moldovan and there's two things to discuss here:

The plan revealed by Zelensky is nothing we didn't expect anyways, because every single person that is somewhat aware of the situation and all the other factors perfectly understood that if Ukraine loses the war, Moldova will be annexed into Russia within 2 days of them establishing control in Ukraine. Moldova does not have a single tank, the military is minuscule and it makes no sense to fight and no one would anyways.

Many are suggesting for Romania to Anschluss Moldova and while it's what I personally would prefer, there are many challenges with this scenario, particularly revolving around legal issues, corruption and most importantly culture. Sadly over time, our two cultures have somewhat diverged, we have a lot of Russian/ Ukrainian people, don't forget the gagauz minority as well, and they would have a very hard time integrating into a traditional Romanian society, on top of the fact that Romania has had 20 years of European plans/ law making and governance while for us the current pro Western government is still trying to remove the tumours left behind by plahotniuc and ilan sor.

I have known for a long time that Rep of Moldova will not survive as a separate country from Romania. Sooner or later they have to came back to its romanian roots where it belongs or they will vanish due to population shrink and dangerous geopolitical position.

Romania will not let this happen to Moldova, when covid hit Moldova, Romania purchased more vaccines to donate them to Moldova. When prices for gas and electricity hit Moldova, Romania again helped them with cheap energy. What people didn't know is that the historical Moldova is half in Romania and half as a country now so there are Moldovans in Romania as well who will not stay and watch how our brothers are getting killed by Russians

Moldova should just vote themselves part of romania, Russia definitely already has previously taken and militarized a small part of the country. It would be a lot better for them to be part of a larger, less likely to be invaded country.

Moldova cannot fence sit anymore. They need to ready all their reserve military and move into Transnistria. The Russian "peacekeepers" can leave or be engaged.

As an American I see Moldova becoming an autonomous nation within the border of Romania as the best option. They would act as a confederation leaving the ability to stay sovereign.

So Putin might of sent pro Russian agitators into these spots but there has to be sympathetic people for them to get to rally behind. Parts of Ukraine might have a national identity as Ukrainian but others still see Russia as their homeland. Similar in the US civil war back then People viewed their home states with their identity .
