I took a polygraph for a job once and, of course was nervous, but I answered each question honestly. I have no criminal history or anything but was a party guy and got into what I thought was just regular mischief in my teenage years. I failed it and wasn’t hired. A couple of years later I was working with a guy who had been friends with a guy who gave polygraph tests. He was working in an Albertson’s store where their policy was to surprise their people with the test at random times. The guy showed up to polygraph his stock crew and he recognized him as an old high school buddy. He ended up having him over and grilling out and he asked him how it worked. The guy laughed and said that there’s no way that a machine can tell if you’re lying, it’s just a trick to get people to fess up to being dishonest or stealing. A couple years later I had to take another one to get hired at a company in Florida. Armed with this new information, I went in there and calmly lied my ass off and passed.

It's really nice to hear someone acknowledge that natural introverts can train themselves to be extroverts. People just seem to assume that if you're one or the other, then you're either constantly excited while out meeting new people, or you're hidden away in your room all day! It's not an absolute one or another....

I often say that there is no situation that can't be made worse by freaking out. Stay calm, stay cool, and think "Okay, what's next?" Staying calm in a crisis, being able to figure things out, finding solutions, and moving with confidence will serve you throughout your life.

Just to reassure those who aren’t comfortable with the things Jason described, there are also positions in the CIA as analyst, where you’re mainly tasked with reviewing and assessing intelligence datum as opposed to fieldwork.

I have always prided myself on being able to talk to all walks of life. I enjoy it

I have noticed more CIA and tier one operators have podcasts and talk about war stories and training, I think it's great, however, it seems like something changed to have more people coming out of the shadows and sharing.
Great video as always!

Perfect list. But remember different skills are useful for differen things. Field agent will need different skills than analytician or agency technician.

I can recommend the book "Legacy of Ashes - The History of CIA" by Tim Weiner for those who are interested in CIA, their bosses and their personel.

Presentation you gave was well done, to the point of skills and ability, and inevitably integrity focused. Thanks for this useful overview. Godbless you and your family.

Making money with the CIA is like being a politician. The office doesn’t pay but so much a year. It’s the contacts, relationships and dealings while you are in that either make or allow for makingafter you leave. That’s why politicians make 200k a year and most are multi millionaires.

The three most important skills to becoming an operator are:
1. Physical fitness.
2. Self defense skills.
3. Medical skills.
