Very possibly Dr. John.. because that’s the way so many of us girls were brought up.. me included… it’s the DEATH of the DREAM..( fairytale, the Cinderella complex)..sadly just because we are willing to sacrifice almost everything to make it happen doesn’t mean the other person in the drama is..and many people have never seen a successful loving marriage, so haven’t even a clue about having one. And then there are the narcissists… who will make EVERYTHING and sacrifice EVERYTHING and EVERYONE for short term pleasure and “happiness.” The grass is most often NOT greener on the other side of the fence folks. Get educated about relationship
Skills..

I have not watched the whole episode (which I say because I know what I’m about to right may not be accurate in that context).

For myself….. if I take some horrific trauma out of the picture…. I don’t feel I’m worth those things in part because the way society interacts on important things says that I’m not. But more importantly, if I say I’m not worth those things, then there is less despair at what I don’t have (and often it feels out of reach after trying intensely).

If the blame is on me, then I can work to fix me. If it’s a mix of me and others and systems and so forth, that often feels insurmountable.

An example: People will say, “You NEED x y z” and on a rational level removed from both emotions and intellect, yes I do. BUT now, I often say, “If I’m still breathing, then clearly it was a want not a need” (and yes this extends to food, water, clothing, blankets, a house, sunshine etc). Because to go, “I don’t have many if any of those things at times, and I tried sooo hard to achieve them just in myself but while asking for genuine help” that is easier to deal with than realising you’re not getting things that one actually does need. I may not be making sense, but if you read this comment and you relate, my heart goes out to you. If you leave a response saying you relate, I’ll try to come back and acknowledge it so you’re not so alone in whatever you’re facing.

I kind of wonder if the grief of my son's diagnosis held me back.
