HUGE Beginner Surfing Mistakes & How To Fix Them

When you start surfing, you begin a lifelong journey of self-improvement and chasing that intangible (& non-existent) goal of perfecting your abilities.

During the Beginner stages there are traps which a lot of beginner surfers fall into. These traps, errors in technique which often become habitual, restrict a surfer's potential growth and progression in the sport.

In this video I talk about 4 of the most common beginner mistakes that I see holding surfers back. There are more, of course, however these ones have been showing up a lot lately when I observe others out in the line up.

Love the tips on turning. Would love to see a video on transitioning from a big foamie to an intermediate board. I'm comfortable with pop-ups and take-offs, and I'm finding it challenging to turn my 8 ft foamie. I know it's better to get on a smaller board with a bit of volume, but I'd love a breakdown of turning and going along the wave, or even how to transition from bigger board to smaller :) thanks guys!

After getting back into surfing after 23 years this is solid info. I found keep paddling until you feel the wave pushing you and give 2 more then stand up

I like the idea of trying to help beginners with your videos. I started when I was 5 and at the end of the day all you can do is get out there as much as possible and watch closely the guys that are good. That’s what I did an eventually I was as good as most guys out there. Starting young was a big advantage

That is a great instructional video... great information. You certainly have a talent in explaining & conveying the mistakes well... & subsequently providing solutions for... of which some problems are hard pick up on in the moment (surfing)… hence the potential for ongoing frustration. Good job supporting this great sport!

Thumbs up! Excellent video like always! I really appreciate all the efforts that you put into this video, especially you fell so many times just to show us the mistakes. It helped me fall less to be able to enjoy the waves. Thank you Kale!😊👍

Great tips! I'm practicing my stance on a home made balance board. I feel like it improved my surfing. Is good for train those foot skills.
But the first was the most important. You cant do anything if you don't read the wave properly.

Just got my first board last week (long board), first wetsuit and all other gear collected. Waiting for weather to give decent waves here in Rhode Island. These videos are great so I have things to try when I get out there for the first time with my board in these frigid waters. Sub'ed! I am slowly going thru all your content. Great stuff.

Thanks Kale for putting in the effort to teach this fantastic sport. You are very kind and patient person and your enthusiasm shines through your videos. I just wished there was bit less aggro and territorialism out there amongst some surfers. You can't own the ocean no matter how entitled you think you are to it.

The 2 extra strokes is a reality that makes a good difference in catching more waves.

Awesome vids guys!
My one request is that you make videos using longboards (8 foot or so), because thats generally what we (begginers/intermediates) are trying to learn with.

Bro, just a heads up, don’t use background music when you are talking. Other than that, thanks a lot for the tips! Great channel
