Two-thirds of the way through this video about 1960s Muscle Cars, the announcer introduced the 1967 Chevelle SS. All the photos however are of the 1970 Chevelle SS 454 LS6 --- which is NOT a 1960s car! He further stated that the SS cars had the OPTIONAL 396 CID V-8 engine. ALL CHEVELLE SS cars from 1965 through 1969 came STANDARD with a 396 CID engine as THE ONLY SS ENGINE AVAILABLE!
On a factory order, however, a customer could option for the 350 CID, 325 HP or 350 HP V-8 engine and receive a Credit. A 350 CID, 360 HP LT1 V-8 engine was also an option, at extra cost. This exact same LT1 engine was rated at 370 HP when installed in the Corvette. The standard/no extra cost base Chevelle SS engine was the L35 396 CID, 325 HP V-8 engine. There were two optional engines for the Chevelle SS model: the L34 396 CID, 350 HP V-8, and the L78 396 CID, 375 HP V-8. In 1970 the bore on the 396 CID engine was increased slightly giving the engine 402 CID. In 1971 the reduction in compression ratios began, and HP and Torque specifications were reported as "net" instead of "gross". A marketing decision was made NOT to change the label from the well-known 396 to 402. As for the Chevelle SS shown, Car Craft magazine tested ALL the Muscle Cars available for 1970. The 1970 Chevelle SS 454, 450 HP LS6 coupe was THE FASTEST American production car available for the 1970 model year, at the drag strip; faster than the 1970 HEMI Cuda which was the second fastest car, and FASTER THAN ALL Corvettes, even the ZL1!
