This is NOT perfectly historically accurate! It’s just for fun: for more in depth resources on 1920s life for women I’ve attached some sources in my bio! 🚨

My mama made $75.00 a week in 1965 as clerical help. Her rent was 50.00 a month. You could buy a week of groceries for a family of 3 for 20.00 and eat like kings.

This reminds me of the history of my 2x great Aunt, Anna Louise Amendt (1866-1938), who was once considered one of the wealthiest salaried women of the US in her time. Her salary was $12, 000 a year starting in 1903 (estimated $453, 815.71 in today’s dollar).

First starting off as a stenographer, she became secretary and first assistant to Gage E. Tarbell, vice president to a life insurance company based in New York. She traveled across country at times for her work. There were articles written about her and her horse almost half a page long. She even resided in Central Park West in New York City. She was unmarried her whole life but described in the paper as beautiful (and with seeing a few pictures of her, she was). I have only found one history book that mentioned her, although it was a very short bit, I did find a few articles written about her next to ones written about Rockefeller. I understand to some this could be boring information, but this reel reminded me of her life and thought those who enjoy history would like this. 💕

Oh darling, my rent went up recently and these landlords think they can take all my hard earned wages. Ugh I’m paying 12 dollars a month now because they just put in a new toilet and bath in all the apartments. Luckily I picked up some extra work a few days a week in the new Macy’s that opened recently near me, and the girls at the garment factory said I had just the talking skill to sell anyone anything, I was looking to take classes of typing but I swear you typists make it look so easy breezy, i always end up so annoyed when I try and practice on my friends type writer, she makes it looks so easy. Ugh. But I must say the fit? Stunning red is definitely one of your colors.

85$ a week with a 20$ rent sounds like a dream! Minus the Measles and stuff, y'know

Average wage was 16.50$ a week in the 20s for a stenographer. 85$ is absolutely ridiculous.

Oh my gosh, I loved the sketch! And I love how you blended their slang and our sling together. It was immaculate.
