Hades is not a demon, nor does he have anything to do with the Christian Hell, He was overseer of the place where souls go when they die, and from all accounts is a just judge of them. He is not equivalent to Satan or any demon prince, nor should he be regarded as such. I recommend THE GREEK GODS by Robert Graves, which has a full chapter on him and his realm. He should be regarded as an unfallen archangel. Why death is regarded as "dark" is a mystery, because eventually everyone and everything dies. One doesn't want to die before one's time, but if one doesn't die early, then one will eventually grow old, with all the aches, pain, and other troubles that come with it, and death is a welcome release from painful old age.
