Today we narrate another of the classic grimm fairy tales that I'm sure many will be familiar with, Rumpelstiltskin.

This story has some serious alchemical undertones to it: Turning an everyday object into gold, the reappearing of the magical number three (three rooms, three offerings, three days), the exchange of gold for a child (alchemy has mystical properties as well and the transmutation of things to gold is often a metaphor for the purifying of the soul), the lesson that to know one's name is to have power over them, etc.

Moral of the story? If you know someone's true name you hold power over them.

It never made sense to me that Rumpelstiltskin could spin straw into gold and yet accepted what, by the sounds of it, were in-expensive pieces of jewellery as payment...

That moment Once Upon A Time's Rumpelstiltskin has a more "believable" and "lovable" story than the real deal.

I might be the only person that sees rumpelstiltskin as the unfortunate victim because he did all the work. Everyone else did nothing and reaped all the benefits.

I love hearing you tell these storys in english and I it's good to see that the actual old fairy tales my grandma used to read to me every evening are getting so much attention outside the german speaking realm. I've always liked them better than the Disney versions
