According to researchers at Durham University and the NOVA University Lisbon, the origins of the story can be traced back to around 4, 000 years ago.[
A possible early literary reference to the tale appears in Dionysius of Halicarnassus's Roman Antiquities, in the 1st century AD

And the ending is not the original tale.
the 1812 Grimm edition, Rumpelstiltskin then “ran away angrily, and never came back". In the 1857 edition, Rumpelstiltskin stomps furiously on the ground and sinks through the ground with one leg. He tries to pull his other leg away, causing him to tear himself in half.
I grew up with the second end, and it was one of my favorite endings. So satisfying gruesome.
(My other favorite was the end of The Story of the Youth Who Went Forth to Learn What Fear Was, because it’s so funny.)

Beautifully done; I've come to expect no less. However I spied an Easter egg:

"The Seven Ravens Tavern."

That brought back a memory for me! Well, half a memory. There was a story I read decades ago about a girl whose seven brothers were turned into ravens and for some reason she couldn't utter a word, but that's all I can remember. Is that from the same fairy tale?

As the only girl and they youngest (3 brothers -- 7 if you included the neighbor boys) I was enamored with that tale. Even though only half-remembered it was still life changing for me, as I never, not once, gave my brothers up when they made trouble. Even when it was obvious.😅

I still feed the crows. There are about 50-100 (depending on season) that come into the garden every day and wait patiently for my little scraps. I know it's not a popular tale but I'd love to see it animated if you could ever spare the time. If not I understand; there are so many well-known stories waiting for you to breathe life into them. Thanks again for bringing such magic into my day.

I think all these fairy tails should be narrated by someone with a heavy English accent! It just sounds more classy and old when an English accent talks..
