Theory: Why are there two ways to spell gray/grey?

I say my theory on why there are two spellings of gray/grey.

its probably really annoying sometimes for british people when in minecraft and other things, you search for grey and nothing shows up. Im not even british and i make this mistake.

It’s “gray” because when the word is pronounced, you pronounce out loud the “A” sound. Not the “E” sound.
