Jimmy Doherty looks at the science behind our food - this time looking how frozen carbon dioxide and liquid mix to create fizzy drinks, and at the explosive consequences of doing it wrong.

Jimmy's Food Factory, Series 1
Instant coffee, processed cheese, square sandwich ham - behind every supermarket product is a process and behind every process is a scientific breakthrough. In this entertaining and thought-provoking programme, farmer and TV personality Jimmy Doherty unpacks the science behind the food items we buy every day - from stay-fresh bread to soft scoop ice cream. Working from a makeshift science lab inside a barn, Jimmy carries out experiments to uncover the secrets of food technology. Exploding myths and revealing the little-known processes of food production, Jimmy's Food Factory will change the way you think about food.

The Best Way to make Fizzy Drinks: not this way!

Would have been able to dissolve more CO2 in his solution if the liquid was very cold. The reefer units built into soda dispensers is not only to serve up a cold drink but to chill the water before it meets the co2 stream.

You can really tell this was made for TV:
1. If he was so worried about a pressure building up why no relief value? Or use a vessel that has better specs to deal with presure.
2. He needs to bubble the CO2 through the solution, not just gas the top.
3. He should really dehumidify the CO2 before gassing into the solution.

Exploding pop bottles is an old machine shop shenanigan. Suggest you incorporate a pressure relief valve for safety.

Aren’t the vapors potentially lethal? I remember hearing of a YouTube who lost her husband and he jumped into a hot tub with dry ice. They said it created lethal vapors at the surface of the water

Ummm. A quick FYI about dry ice to CO2, from experiments with the tank of a CO2 fire extinguisher. The empty weight of the cylinder was 2.5 kg. The "tare" weight (or "filled" weight) is stamped into the metal cylinder - 10 pounds, or 4.5 kg. We added 2 kg of dry ice to the cylinder, and re-installed the valve and pressure gauge. Tank pressure went up to 920 p.s.i. as the CO2 warmed and turned to gas (and some liquid). This is about the norm, and the tank was within its test expiry date. I mention this only because someone might be tempted to use a larger and what looks like a "more substantial" container, with fatal results.

Pressure cookers would be safer as they have pressure relief valves. But, can they reach useful pressure?

yeast and 48 hours. Good thing about yeast is the soda never goes flat

Giancarlo Fisichella isn't fizzy enough for you, so you're making your own

Cool set up! I prefer a soda siphon for smaller batches! 👍

This is what you get for paying for a tv license.

Is it safe to put solid Carbon Dioxide into a cup of water just like that?

The best way it to make a slightly fizzy drink? That was not helpful.

you need a stabilizer, something that helps the CO2 convert to CO3, otherwise theres nothing holding the equilibrium back when you release the pressure. Usually a weak base like sodium benzoate, helps the pH shift too. This way you're just gonna have a bad time.

then again, cola is a not-so-soft drug

How's that the best way? Time is money. Can I get my money back?

This can't be consumed, dry ice in drinks is dangeours.

Lets use this CO2 solid to vaporization process to drive an air compression engine! BTW...You didnt show us how to make Cola!!

why must you insist on calling it "Frozen Carbon dioxide" most people know it as Dry ice or Cardice.

Why not just use a sodasteam? British always try to over-complicate things.
