Mario made his first appearance, however, in 1981 in the arcade classic Donkey Kong. Did you know Mario was named after a real life plumber? The creators were behind on rent and the land lord was an Italian plumber named Mario Segale. So he made a deal with Mario to create Mario.

Great Video. With regards to Super Mario Run being the first outside of Nintendo Hardware, Mario Bros., Donkey Kong, and Donkey Kong Jr. were ported to Atari and the latter two to Intellivision.
