What is SpO2 Oxygen Saturation ? | Normal Oxygen Saturation Level | Low Oxygen Saturation | Understanding oxygen saturation levels

Oxygen Saturation, also called as SpO2 is measured by Finger Pulse Oximeter and its measures how much oxygen is carried by the blood .
BUT
How does Oxygen reach the blood ?

When we breathe . we are breathing the air around us .Air contains gases and how much percentage of oxygen is in the air ?
It’s around 21%

Composition of Atmospheric Air
➡️ Oxygen 20.84 %
➡️ Carbon Dioxide 0.04 %
➡️ Nitrogen 78.62 %
➡️ Water Vapour 0.5 %

and when we breathe, the oxygen enters the lungs and from lungs into the alveoli and carbon dioxide moves out into the lungs and oxygen enters the blood and distributed all over the body through arteries. and we are measuring , how much oxygen is in the blood with finger pulse oximeter.

Blood contains Red Blood cells or RBC’s . Red Blood cells contain Hemoglobin and Hemoglobin have high affinity for Oxygen. One molecule of Hb can carry 4 molecules of Oxygen on its 4 binding sites . When these 4 binding sites carry oxygen, then its said to be saturated .

A healthy individual with normal lungs, breathing air at sea level will have an arterial Saturation of 95% to 100%. Extremes of altitudes affect it . You can watch David Blaine Ascesion, where he flies 25,000 feet above the sea level with balloons and you can see how altitudes affect oxygen saturation.

It important non invasive tool to measure oxygen saturation at home and clinics , as an early identification tool of low oxygen saturation before being clinically evident.
