I use MPV because it supports frame-by-frame playback forwards and backwards. VLC does forwards only, and it tends to freeze after going forward for a bit. As much as I want to love VLC, I need a video player that I can use to analyze game footage without it getting stuck.

I don't think the pipewire and dmabuf changes are particularly interesting. One huge and important change is that the Wayland version of MPV now works on NVIDIA. The 2nd biggest change is the usable gpu-next/libplacebo output which has higher quality video scaling, support for HDR/Dolby Vision etc.

dma-buf is a mechanism to share resources (GEM objects here) between processes, just like shared memory does.

I usually use Mpv, even as a GNOME user, I prefer Mpv for video playing (used to use mplayer before that).

I think it will get there someday, but, it's good to know there is some Pipewire integration on Mpv as well.

Perhaps there was room for it to get better on Wayland and Pipewire? Because it has been fine for donkeys years on Xorg and Pulseaudio.

This and the fact that Wayland will soon get an asynchronous/disabled vsync protocol will make it a much more appealing platform to switch to for most Linux users, I'm sure.

I'm honestly still using pulseaudio 😅 haven't really gotten into the mood to start migrating to pipewire, but wow… seriously impressed with how far this has come. I remember when Pipewire was just a concept around 6-8 years ago, mainly due to how people wanted the PiTiVi video editor to do well 😂

Mpv is absolutely amazing and I wouldn't want to use any other video player, but personally I'm still on X11.

I use MPV all the time to have an animated background. Which reminds me - is that even possible on Wayland? On Xorg, I just have MPV render on the root window, but afaik, that's not really a thing in Wayland.

With VLC I have a terrible issue on Android when trying to listen to music though it. It keeps speeding up and slowing down shifting the pitch of the music up and down. It's horrible, but somehow nobody else seems to experience or notice it. However I have even experienced it on desktop, so I never use VLC.

MPV is the best video player because it supports opengl shaders, with thta you can upscale video using FSR 1.0, then you can stack other shaders on top of that, then you can use SVP on top of those to interpolate the output.

Something tells me these new wayland features wont work with SVP, oh well, wait for an update.

Is mpv still a gui for mplayer or is it its own thing now? I just use mplayer. Is there a compelling reason to switch to mpv or smplayer or one of these things?

already got it on gentoo with pipewire flag, mpv decodes it on my dedicated gpu

my laptop with ryzen 7 5800 and rtx3060 dropscouple frames while watching blade runner torrent (with --hwdec=auto, drops frames on both gpu's). Maybe this addition will help me with a dropless viewing experience

Why is it that in just about every 2nd video it seems that if something does not work as it's intended, the name "Gnome" is mentioned... Not that I would really care, being on Kubuntu and happy with it.
