I love having these kinds of videos. It gives me a basic rundown of a program I might want to try without needing to spend time opening research tabs and reading up on the documentation.

The other nice thing about mpv is it can be easily used remotely over network. I have some speakers attached to a SMSL SA300 amp and that's connected to a laptop in my bedroom. I'm frequently in the bed with another laptop. With MPV I can ssh to the laptop and run either a youtube video or playlist of music and unselect the video part:

mpv --no-video <put youtube URL here>

The wifi gets a bit slow in the bedroom, so stripping out the video helps (I think that's done at the request level so youtube is only sending me the audio stream).

I love to run MPV in the background with keybindings, I have it setup to accept MPRIS media commands from my media keys on my keyboard to allow me to skip, pause / play and go back with keyboard buttons.
Then I setup a shortcut to run a command to make it play my music playlist on youtube on shuffle without me needing to open any app or terminal. In plasma, I have the playbar widget to show me the song name and artist in my panel so I always know what song is playing

Nice overview! I like the idea of a plug in allowing real time cropping capabilities. One feature that I wish all video players had is dynamic zoom capabilities, where you can zoom in and out as well as panning during playback without losing too much resolution. Unfortunately, the only player I've seen offer this and more was in GOM player, which is only available in Windows. Maybe MPV will offer the same. That would be awesome. Love the channel!

You know at first I loathed the configuration file type set up behind MPV and now that i've had time to think it over i'm in love with the configuration file approach because its like you could have a gui to do all of that but then it wouldn'tbe lightweight.

MPV is my favorite too. You use mpv from your terminal on almost _ANY_ website, if you have YT-downloader installed. And often have "higher" quality btw.

I had a weird setup where my home was on NTFS and shared between Windows and Linux. I/O was terribly slow and mpv was buffering every 1-2s. VLC worked better in that case.
I prefer mpv though and I didn't even memorize the default keybinds yet.

What useflags did you have to use to stream videos directly from youtube ?

I want YT music only, so in my terminal, I type:
mpv --no-video <URL>
However, there are some YT music 'video' playlists that won't allow me to hit pause or even q for quit, so I am forced to kill mpv in htop by highlighting, hitting F9, and then enter. But, I figured that out: the YT URLs that have a really long line with " &list=PL" in the middle of the URL can be amended by you and me to play correctly in mpv (in terminal) by simple deleting that " &list=PL" part of the line and all that comes after it.

You can save a list of these audio URLs in your bash_history and use control+R (Recursive) to search for "mpv" (type `mpv` in) while in your terminal. Keep hitting control R to go through your many URLs, then press > (right arrow key) to select then enter to play.

Also, I used to be able to listen to live YT 'videos' that way, but YT did away with the live function? All of the live (audio) URLs I liked and filed no longer work.

Well I like the upscaler you can add with libraries (using nvidia gpus).
The problem is that it bugs out on HDR content. Brightness is all over the place

So when nvidia makes their upscaler public, I will probably just go ahead and uninstall it.

5:56 umh, i was expecting that u'd also show what the mem / cpu usage is after u close the vid, so that 2 datapoints were there, and subtracting both of those would have given an even better figure
