I gave up on Lost about three seasons in. There's a difference between good mystery and an obviously aimless layering of unanswered questions to which the answers clearly haven't even been devised yet. The writing on that show was terrible, they were trying to stretch out what should have been a one-off story into into a ridiculous number of episodes. You can only spread butter so thin before you're basically just eating dry toast.

The problem with "Lost" wasn't that they withheld answers -- it was that eventually it became clear they didn't have answers.  I'm a mediocre writer, but it doesn't take a great one to see that.
